Health Care Support Worker:


Job Summary:


Provide non-judgmental support, advocacy, and resource information to tenants of Atira Property Management Inc., some of whom may have recently transitioned from encampments or homelessness and who may be service resistant but in need of specific and timely medical care and struggle connecting with health care practitioners and or other service providers.


Responsible for the day-to-day work of supporting residents with a wide array of mental and or physical wellness related to health and practical support.

Services must be delivered in a manner consistent with Atira Women's Resource Society's feminist-based philosophy, and take into consideration all forms of oppression facing the women and children who access Atira's services.


Reports To:

Program Manager or their designate.


Primary Accountabilities:


  • Assesses the health and well-being of residents and making referrals to health care and other service providers.
  • Conducts regular health and safety checks, and liaises with Vancouver Coastal Health regarding residents' medical needs as well as with a number of other community partners.
  • Liaises with health care practitioners regarding providing a safe supply of medication, and dispenses medications as directed by health care providers including the administration of naloxone.
  • Provides one-to-one support, accompaniments to health and wellness appointments, advocacy and personal (home) support, and connects residents with legal services and or treatment avenues.
  • Caring for tenants who are sick and may have infectious diseases including COVID-19.
  • Establishes rapport with residents and provides well being support, assisting them with problem solving, day-today matters/issues of living, managing behaviors, and self
- care/personal hygiene, etc.


  • Actively helps residents keep their rooms clean and prepared for pest control.
  • Participates in activities to support skill development and recovery from problematic substance use or behavior issues.
  • Performs additional duties as requested and/ or required by Program Manager.

Skills & Abilities:


  • Welldeveloped understanding of and commitment to antioppression work and intersectionality.
  • Ability to work with residents who may have health struggles (including COVID19), who may be struggling with substance use, brain trauma and cognitive impairment and or mental wellness or behavioral issues.
  • Ability to deal effectively with conflict situations, manage aggressive behavior, and use nonviolent crisis intervention and behavioral management techniques.
  • Ability to organize work and carry out duties of the position with independence.
  • Ability to collaborate effectively with others.
  • Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing.
  • Ability to work under pressure and manage stress.
  • Knowledge of community, social and health resources.
  • Ability to work within a harm reduction environment.
  • Flexible and open to taking on new and diverse tasks.
  • Ability to strictly maintain confidentiality.

Qualifications:


  • A degree, diploma or certificate in a healthcare related discipline and one to five years' experience (depending on education) as a frontline health care worker working with people affected by trauma and who may also struggle with substance use and or mental wellness. The equivalent combination of experience and skillbased training may be considered.
  • Lived expertise is an asset, as is living in the community in which you work.
  • Knowledge of substance use and its impact on people who are dependent on same.
  • Knowledge of the impact of trauma on behaviour and mental wellness.
  • Basic understanding of behavior management.

Additional Information:

This position is required to work in a stressful environment often dealing with peoples in crisis situations.

The ability to function independently and frequently under pressure while managing multiple concurrent programs, including managing emergency situations is an ongoing expectation.

Evening and weekend work may be required.

  • A valid First Aid certificate is required
  • A current Non Violent Crisis Intervention certificate is required (achieved or upgraded within past 12 months)
  • Food Safe an asset
