At UBC, we believe that attracting and sustaining a diverse workforce is key to the successful pursuit of excellence in research, innovation, and learning for all faculty, staff and students.

Our commitment to employment equity helps achieve inclusion and fairness, brings rich diversity to UBC as a workplace, and creates the necessary conditions for a rewarding career.

Job Summary

Biodiversity is eroding, and along with it, the capacity to sustain humanity on this planet. Species extinction rates are increasing and even many common species are declining in abundance.

Both aspects of biodiversity loss are likely to affect the supply of services that species and ecosystems provide to humans.

Climate change further exacerbates conditions for both biodiversity and agriculture. Dr.

Claire Kremen,President's Excellence Chair (PEC) in Biodiversity Studies, runs the WoRCS lab (Working to Restore Connectivity and Sustainability), which investigates how to reconcile biodiversity conservation with agricultural production on working lands.

This research is critical for informing agricultural and conservation practices and policies.

We are seeking a highly motivated Research Assistant/Tech 4 for contributing to and supporting the WoRCS research program.

Examples of WoRCS research projects that the Technician might contribute to and/or support include:
(1) surveying bee and bird communities and study the efficacy of bees as pollinators of blueberry, and birds as pests or pest control agents, on crops like blueberry; (2) assessing use of crop and non-crop resources by bees and birds on farms differing in use of agroecological diversification practices, using direct observations, pollen analysis and meta-barcoding techniques; (3) following selected bird or mammal species using telemetry and analyzing movement patterns relative to farmland diversification; (4) developing new methods of agricultural diversification and assessing their effectiveness for crop production and support of biodiversity and ecosystem services.

Field work sites could be located in agricultural areas of the Fraser Valley, Okanagan Valley as well as several tropical areas.

Lab work, data synthesis, data analysis and preparation of publications will be carried out in the Biodiversity Research Centre at UBC.

Organizational Status

The incumbent reports to the President's Excellence Chair, Dr Claire Kremen, and will work closely with the other members of the research team including: Research Associates, Postdoctoral Fellows and Graduate (M. Sc; PhD) and Undergraduate Students.
