Job Summary

The Research Manager works at the Infant Studies Centre, a dynamic, interdisciplinary research centre in the Department of Psychology.

The Centre focuses on language acquisition and speech perception in early infancy, with the overall goal being to understand the link between perceptual development and mature language use, utilizing both behavioral and neuroimaging techniques.

Organizational Status

This position reports directly to Dr. Janet F. Werker, the Director of the Infant Studies Centre.

This position also works closely with students, post-doctoral fellows and other research technicians in the Centre, as well as with administrative staff in the Department of Psychology, Finance Office, and Office of Research Services as-needed.

Work Performed


Major responsibilities include:

  • Manages the financial concerns of the Centre, including administering and monitoring the status of grant funds; effecting reimbursements, payments, and other financial transactions as necessary; and keeping accurate and timely records.
  • Oversees the hiring and appointment of research assistants and filling volunteer positions within the Centre. Assigns duties, coordinates schedules, oversees work and resolves performance issues. Trains new research assistants, and helps to onboard new researchers; advises and responds to questions regarding lab protocols and procedures.
  • Prepares financial and research progress reports for the Director and granting agencies asneeded.
  • Collects data. Writes protocols for data management and experimental procedures. Resolves issues (be they technical, procedural, or interpersonal) as they arise during data collection. Helps to support data analysis and writeup for review by the Director and other researchers.
  • Supports community engagement. Oversees the Centre's recruitment activities by research assistants and researchers (e.g., fairs; social media) and coordinates lab events (e.g., open houses).
  • Shows leadership in promoting equity, inclusivity, and diversity in the Centre and in ensuring a respectful workplace.
Consequence of Error/Judgement


Errors in managing the financial affairs of the Centre may result in loss of funds available from granting agencies, or in damage to the relationship between the granting agency or University and the Centre.

Errors in conducting research may lead to loss of data or prolongation of the time required to complete studies, with accompanying additional expenses incurred.

Errors in the management of Centre personnel may result in the creation of concerns in the Centre dynamic that have a negative impact on the morale and/or understanding of the researchers and students in the Centre.

Supervision Received


The employee will be under general supervision, receiving instruction from the Director when new duties are assigned and when unusual problems arise, but will also work with some latitude and will be expected to independently problem-solve as-needed.

Minimum Qualifications

Undergraduate degree in a relevant discipline (e.g. Psychology, Linguistics, Cognitive Systems, Neuroscience, etc.). Minimum of two years of related experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
