St. Helen's Anglican Church (Orleans, Ottawa) is searching for a
COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT SPECIALIST who will provide expertise to church leaders and enhance existing or to establish new networks to strengthen the relations and engagement of the parish to its broader community. St. Helen Parish values its community and is continuously finding ways to increase visibility, relations, and relevance in terms of being of service to people from all walks of life. This is a one-year service contract.


ROLE SUMMARY


The role of the Community Engagement Specialist is to provide expertise to increase the community engagement capability of the parish to be able to relevantly participate and contribute to the betterment of the community where St Helen's Anglican Church conducts its services.


RESPONSIBILITIES:


Strategic

  • Assist the parish in building and establishing connections with broader community in Orleans.
  • Determine plans and programs that can enhance the engagement of parish members with the broader community.
  • Identify opportunities for potential partnerships with the various organizations and members of the community serving the people of Orleans.
  • Will work with the church leaders to establish a shortterm and longterm plan for engaging with communities starting with a charting of a vision on community relations.

Building Capability

  • Facilitate the facetoface relationshipbuilding of parish leaders with key leaders in the community.
  • Lead or colead community events initiated by the parish or support its public events by providing advice and promoting it to the broader community.
  • Conduct learning sessions with church leaders on community relations and managing external stakeholders.
  • Initiate a oneyear project that will build the overall capability of the parish to grow its community relations.

Administrative

  • Establish a community database of organizations, people, and their services that will be a useful reference for church leaders.
  • Monitors the plans, projects, and programs that will be established by the parish on community relations and regularly provide updates on their achievements.
  • Reports directly to the Incumbent/Priest of St. Helen's Anglican Church.

Qualifications:


Education, Experience, and Knowledge

  • At least 5 years of solid leadership experience in a role as a community relations expert, or in a related profession.
  • A degree from a recognized university in Political Science, Communications, Public Relations, or a related field is an asset.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of how various types of organizations operating in the community and how best to effectively establish relations with them.
  • Have proven experience in organizing community relations activities or events leading to growth in people's engagement with the initiatives of the community.
  • Have proven experience in dealing with community leaders and in establishing strong ties with them to promote and support the various initiatives of various organizations.

Qualities and Competencies

  • A passion for connecting with people and networking in communities.
  • Excellent communication skills in written and oral English; knowledge of French would be considered an asset.
  • Personable and actively affirming with a high degree of professionalism.
  • Strategic thinker, with strong analytical skills.
  • Organized with strong attention to detail.
  • Resultsoriented mindset and selfdirected.
  • Ability and desire to work with a diverse population: parishioners and church leaders, clergy of the Anglican Church, community leaders, and government representatives.
  • Willingness to work within a faithbased organization with Christian values.

Other requirements:


  • Must be willing to enter into a consulting agreement with the Parish/Diocese for the period of one year.
  • Must be willing to provide reference checks from previous work and to undergo police clearance for a criminal background check; both must have results to the satisfaction of the Diocese.
  • Must be willing to do consulting work onsite (Church); 2 days per week, 1520hours.
  • Must be willing to work on occasional evenings and weekends, depending on the church and community requirements.
