Perform, coordinate or provide leadership for a variety of complex payroll, time, tax and reporting activities in Canada.

Payroll includes the preparation and distribution of payroll, maintenance of individual payroll records and preparation of governmental forms and reports.

It also consists of calculating such matters as overtime, shift differentials and making subsequent adjustments, as applicable. Conduct special assignments as necessary and strengthen responsiveness to customers as well as union needs.

The position also entails gathering payroll information by making sure financial records are properly organized, completing compliance, tax and other governmental reports to ensure the company remains compliant with the most current laws and regulations regarding payroll and taxes for Canada.

Support the migration of payroll activities from SAP platform to a new managed service and/or platform, yet to be determined.

Partner with existing staff to grow payroll knowledge and skillset.


Responsibilities:


  • Work and lead in a highly complex, matrixed environment.
  • Manage payroll workload to meet operational requirements, including running weekly, biweekly and offcycle payrolls.
  • Ensure payroll is processed in an accurate, compliant and timely manner, lead and address issue research/resolution and mitigate risks.
  • Prepare payroll related documents and reports, including record of employment, electronic payments, pay slip printing, as well as relevant weekly, monthly, quarterly and yearend reports.
  • Oversee the maintenance of data systems, including accurate processing of hours, earnings, deductions and employment actions.
  • Review and analyze current benefits, payroll and tax processes and procedures with the goal of making recommendations concerning improvements that can be made to those procedures.
  • Work with Finance to prepare and review payroll account balances and reconciliations.
  • Manage third party remittances (DAS, garnishments, WCB/CSST, etc.) as well as yearend T4s, filings and other government activities.
  • Ensure all payroll information and records are maintained in accordance with statutory/compliance requirements while interpreting new legislation impacting payroll.
  • Remain uptodate on the latest payroll requirements, laws and compliance areas as well as techniques, practices and technology.
  • Oversee and work with a variety of systems, tools and vendors.
Your background

  • Strong understanding of Canadian payroll compliance, rules, laws, regulations and reporting requirements.
  • Demonstrated ability to partner with key internal stakeholders, including operations, Finance, IT, and HR.
  • Proven track record of implementing and optimizing payroll process using SAP, Kronos, ADP and/or Workday.
  • Experience in translating functional payroll requirements into appropriate design documentation and system specification development.
  • Strong technical problemsolving skills, with an ability to troubleshoot complex issues with a focus on customer service.
  • Good verbal and written communication skills both English and French.
  • Strong planning, scheduling, and organization skills as well as attention to detail and accuracy.
  • Liaise with auditors and manage payroll tax audits.
  • Excellent understanding of multilocation payroll and taxes.
  • Complexity of Tasks: Requires indepth knowledge of complex human resource and payroll operations and systems, ability to effectively interpret operating statistics, independently conduct investigations and resolve related matters. Must have strong communication skills to effectively interface with, and influence managers and other staff in various departments. Requires familiarity with latest changes in the payroll field and ability to effectively integrate them locally within the US and Canada.
  • Qualifications: Bachelor's Degree in Business Administration, Accounting, Finance, Human Resources or related field plus 5 to 10 years of payroll experience, or alternatively, a special combination of education and experience and/or demonstrated accomplishments. Certified Payroll Professional (CPP or CPM) designation preferred.
