    Marine Atlantic is currently looking for an Internal Auditor 1 to work with our Internal Audit department. The successful candidate may choose to work from either North Sydney, NS or Port aux Basques, NL.

    The Internal Audit (IA) Department in Marine Atlantic is a small audit shop design with a focus on integrated Audits throughout the corporation. As an independent, objective assurance and consulting activity, the Internal Audit department strives to add value to the corporation through the assessment of the corporation's Risk Management, Control and Governance processes.

    The Internal Audit department reports functionally to the Audit and Finance Committee of the Board of Directors and is mandated to provide assurance on:

    • Achievement of the organization's strategic objectives,

    • The assets of the company are safeguarded and controlled,

    • The financial, human and physical resources of the company are managed economically and efficiently, and the operations of the company are carried out effectively,

    • The transactions of the company are in accordance with its' charter and bylaws, the Financial Administration Act and related regulations, and accounting standard, and

    • Integrity of management and financial information.

    The incumbent will assist the audit team by executing analysis and research to support the objectives of the internal audits. Guidance on the requirements and processes for analysis aligning with the Institute of Internal Auditors (IIA) Standards will be provided by members of the Internal Audit team. In completing the analysis and research the incumbent will interact with MAI staff as part of an audit team. The work completed in this position would flow upwards through the other IA staff supporting the ultimate goal of the completion of the objectives.

    In addition to audit specific related activities, the incumbent will assist with administrative tasks related to operations of the Internal Audit office. The position is intended as a development position with the goal of the individual transitioning to the position of Internal Auditor 2. Professional development opportunities will be provided to advance the level of Internal Audit knowledge, which would include the opportunity to pursue certification.

    Additional Key Areas of Responsibility

    • Assists in the performance of audit planning and design to meet the objectives of the review.
    • Applies appropriate audit techniques and methods to evaluate internal controls, assesses key risks as per the engagement audit plan.
    • Assists in the preparation of reports that reflect audit's results and documentation of process.
    • Applies assessment evaluation techniques such as, analytical, interviews, and observations to support the achievement of the audit objectives.
    • Identifies gaps and recommends potential risk mitigation alternatives.
    • Maintains current and relevant audit knowledge through continuous professional development.
    • Promotes a safe working environment; addresses unsafe work practices and ensures information is recorded in the tracking system.

    Qualifications:


    • University Degree or College Diploma in a relevant field.

    • Minimum three (3) years of relevant audit or analytical experience is required.

    • or a combination of equivalent education, job-related training and experience in a related position.

    Knowledge, Skills & Experience (Essential):


    • Strong analytical and interpretive skills.

    • Strong oral and written communication skills.

    • Strong computer skills – Proficiency in Microsoft Office products with a high proficiency in Microsoft Excel.

    • Ability to manage own work plan while respecting deadlines within the department.

    • Strong interpersonal skills.

    • Ability to work independently with a minimal supervision.

    • Ability to make sound judgements, have a strong work ethic to meet work standards.

    Knowledge, Skills & Experience (Desirable):


    • Professional Accounting and/or Internal Audit Designation, such as Chartered Professional Accountant (CPA), Certified Internal Auditor (CIA) would be considered an asset.

    • Willingness to further education in the internal audit profession.
