The Municipality of Chatham-Kent has an opening for a seasonal full-time Facility Operator in the Parks, Recreation and Cemeteries department in Chatham.

This temporary opportunity is for a period up until October 2023.

Preference will be given to CUPE 12.1 members.

Job description


The Facility Operator (Parks, Recreation & Cemeteries) is responsible for performing a variety of semi-skilled tasks in the maintenance and operation of buildings, grounds, ice maintenance, playground areas, sport fields, indoor pool and public beach facilities.

Essential responsibilities

Demonstrate Chatham-Kent's core values and competencies

Duties include janitorial, building, indoor pool, turf, grounds, beach and ice maintenance


Custodial work including:

changing light bulbs and fluorescent tubes; sweeping floors; mopping; dumping garbage cans; cleaning and sanitizing rest rooms and replenishing supplies; cleaning spills; cleaning drinking fountains, mirrors, tables, walls, fixtures, light fixtures, etc.

; washing windows, walls, metal and woodwork; cleaning rain gutters; sweeping roofs


Maintenance of buildings, parks and open space areas, including ball diamonds, soccer pitches, skateboard parks, indoor pool and public beach etc.

Maintain goal posts, fences and nets for sports facilities, including soccer, baseball, softball, beach volleyball and basketball; cleans and maintains pickle ball courts and nets


Maintain ball fields:
lines and prepares fields for games; maintains current skills and knowledge in the proper and safe techniques of ball maintenance functions

Assist with maintaining playground equipment, waste containers, park benches and park buildings, including playground inspections repair and maintenance, and grounds care and building maintenance

Sweep, wash, paint, and repair or replace building and park amenities

Assist in setting up and taking down equipment for various special events

Maintain and adjust specialized equipment and tools, including electric motors, pumps, and tractors

Collect and dispose of solid waste from buildings and grounds; pick up litter from building and parks areas

Perform semi-skilled interior building maintenance such as painting, plumbing, cleaning, and other unskilled and semi-skilled trades work

Perform routine maintenance on power equipment

Operate specialized equipment, power tools, cleaning and safety equipment

Patrol the facilities and parks to identify issues, safety hazards or improper operations

Respond to requests from patrons and to facility issues and/or maintenance requests

Operate and monitor facility operation systems and records readings in accordance with provincial legislation/regulations

Responsible for the building security ensuring that policies and procedures are being followed; open and closes, locks and unlocks facilities as required

Assist with training and supervision of part time staff and summer students

Essential qualifications

Secondary school graduation diploma or equivalent GED

Minimum two years' experience in repair and maintenance work (woodworking, carpentry, mechanical (blowers, lawnmowers), plumbing, etc.)

Mechanical knowledge of facility systems (HVAC, dehumidification, lighting) preferred

Knowledge of parks operations (including automation, building maintenance and risk management)


Skilled in the following:

pickup truck, tractors, ice resurfacer

ball diamond grooming equipment, irrigation systems, sprinkler systems, filtration devices, airifier

ice maintenance

mowers, edger's, weed trimmers

chain saws, hand and power tools

painting, cement finishing work

pumps, plumbing, valves

electric motors, electrical, gauges

janitorial equipment including floor buffers, vacuums, mops, brooms, etc.

Technical expertise in forestry tree cutting and pruning, maintenance

Technical knowledge in the operation of indoor pool water treatment, irrigation systems and turf

Ability to inspect, clean & troubleshoot small power equipment

Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with other employees, officials, and all members of the general public

Knowledge of related provincial legislation/regulations

Ability to lead and supervise part-time staff/summer students

Computer skills, specifically Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook) (or other similar software program)

Other qualifications

Electrical, plumbing, HVAC, painting, dry walling and carpentry experience would be an asset
