This is a 4 month full time contract position to cover summer vacations.

Animal Attendants within the PM Animal Resource Centre function on a rotation basis through all of the following work areas depending on operational demand:

clean preparation area, animals rooms carrying husbandry and room maintenance, cleaning and stocking of general facility support areas such as corridors and labs and the soiled preparation area washing, sanitizing and sterilizing equipment.

Animal health and welfare must be considered priority of all employees of the ARC. Animal Attendants function in these areas under supervision of the facility supervisor.

Animal Attendants must follow departmental and institutional Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) and are required to sign off on completed tasks at each work area.


Qualifications

  • Completion of High School or recognized equivalent in years' experience within a laboratory animal facility
  • Up to one year of relevant experience
  • Ability to speak, read and write English
  • Effective organizational, interpersonal and communication skills
  • Exercise initiative and good judgment with ability to multitask
  • Compliance with confidentiality requirements
  • Ability to work both independently and as part of a team
  • Ability to perform duties in a professional and courteous manner and produce high quality work while meeting deadlines
  • Knowledge of applicable legislative, UHN and/or departmental policies
  • Client service oriented, with the ability to effectively work with diversity and appreciate that people with different opinions, backgrounds and characteristics bring richness to the challenge or situation at hand
  • Ability to lift 50 lbs
  • No known allergies to animals
  • Previous experience within a laboratory animal facility preferred
  • Previous exposure to autoclaves and sterilization process preferred
  • Previous exposure to GLP standards preferred
  • Previous exposure to aseptic technique preferred


Vaccines (COVID and others) are a requirement of the job unless you have an exemption on a medical ground pursuant to the Ontario Human Rights Code.
