What can I expect to do in this role?:

  • Perform plumbing maintenance, repairs, installations and other related support services
  • Install, service, replace, and monitor plumbing equipment in high pressure water systems such as drainage and sewage lines, toilets, sinks, other fixtures, water controls, hot water heating equipment, plate heat exchangers, and humidifiers
  • Determine work methods in accordance with government codes and bylaws, institutional safety and security requirements, plumbing trade standards, and manufacturer's warranty instructions
  • Estimate material and labor requirements, requisition supplies, and keep records of supplies used
  • Inspect and repair plumbing and heating fixtures (such as maintaining and servicing a large network of motorized and pneumatic valves, maintaining and servicing radiant panels, reheat coils, and other related plumbing and heating equipment)
  • Perform preventative maintenance (such as cleaning floor drains, servicing sewer traps, cleaning and maintaining heat exchangers, changing pump seals and motors, etc.) and maintain service records
  • Monitor various computerized electronic systems
  • Maintain necessary tools and ensuring safety and security
  • Supervise and instruct resident inmate helpers
  • Perform other maintenance duties, as assigned

How do I qualify?:


Mandatory:


  • You currently hold a valid licence as a Plumber, as recognized in Ontario
  • You are currently certified in First Aid and Heartsaver OR able/willing to obtain certification upon hire

Specialized Knowledge and Experience:


  • You have extensive knowledge of the techniques, equipment, and tools used in the plumbing practice to determine the proper methods for installing fixtures (such as bathtubs, toilets, water controls, radiators, and for maintaining and repairing plumbing installations)
  • You have knowledge of relevant legislation, municipal bylaws and codes, provincial building codes
  • You have knowledge of and experience in using blueprints, plans, and drawings
  • You have experience estimating labour and material requirements to install, service and replace plumbing equipment (such as drainage and sewer lines, toilets, pneumatic and motorized valves, pumps and tanks)
  • You have knowledge of health and safety (WHMIS, Occupational Health and Safety Act, etc.) and can recognize workplace hazards and security breaches so that corrective action can be prompt
  • You have demonstrated ability to understand and comply with organizational policies and protocols in order to acquire knowledge of and work within institutional security practices and procedures

Communication and Interpersonal Skills:


  • You are able to discuss requests for new installations or extensive repairs as well as effectively interact with correctional staff, other tradespersons, management, and inmates
  • You can prepare reports, maintain
