Working for the Department of Laboratory Medicine and Pathology
The Department of Laboratory Medicine and Pathology serves as an academic Centre of Excellence in Medical Laboratory Sciences, Pathology, Environmental Health Sciences and Toxicology through excellence in education, research, and clinical service delivery in partnership with Alberta Precision Laboratories.
We offer five residency training programs, seven MD fellowship programs, four clinical PhD fellowship programs, a graduate studies program that also includes a Pathologists' Assistant Program, and a Medical Laboratory Science Undergraduate Program.
Position
This position involves the laboratory component of all MLSCI courses with a lab component excluding MLSCI 461 Advanced Mass Spectrometry and MLSCI 435 Advanced Flow cytometry.
This position requires experience in the areas of hematology, clinical chemistry, medical microbiology, histology, transfusion medicine, genetics, and cell culture.
The position involves preparation of reagents and materials for lab sessions; the clearing of biohazards, chemical hazards; the maintenance of physical spaces and equipment.
In addition, the position involves the continued maintenance of on-line databases and inventories.Duties
Lab Preparation - 85%
- Ensure the student labs are supplied with the adequate amounts of the appropriate PPE
- Ensure the student labs are supplied with adequate amounts of soap and paper towels
- Ensure the student labs are equipment with adequate amounts of disinfectant for student use
- Prepare reagents for MLSCI student labs
- Perform and document quality control on all lab methods prior to the student lab to ensure the student lab will be successful
- Set up labs:
- Laboratory equipment, reagents, mock patient samples, unknowns and consumables for student labs
- Assist instructors with student supervision during lab sessions
- Provides demonstrations and direction to students regarding, but not limited to, how to conduct laboratory procedures, sterile techniques, and the proper usage of lab equipment
- Dismantle labs:
- Remove used equipment; if appropriate disinfect and prepare for long term storage
- Remove reagents from the student lab and properly store or discard
- Maintain clean and organized preparation room, workspace, storage rooms
- Maintain clean and organized student lab spaces
- Prepare, update and maintain an electronic database for processes and procedures used in the preparation of MLS student labs
- Maintain accurate records of chemicals, prepared reagents,
- Maintain accurate records of biologicals
- Maintain accurate equipment, equipment maintenance, and equipment repairs and service contracts
- Procure costing for lab supplies
- Order lab supplies and equipment
- Facilitate equipment and facility maintenance and repairs
- Maintain the designated budget
- Identify areas for cost savings in student labs
- Attend MLS staff and Safety meetings
- Facilitate chemical and biological disposal with appropriate university departments or external partners
- Facilitate the short term loan of equipment
- Facilitate the disposal of broken or surplus equipment
- Provide access to secure areas to authorized University Staff and students
- Follow all applicable federal, provincial and local laws and university and MLS policies
- Maintain first aid and CPR certifica
