- Administration of permit applications received by Tsleil-Waututh Nation
- Plan checker for Part 9 construction projects, and
- Construction inspections for Part 9 projects to ensure construction activities meet the applicable designs and standards, and the works are executed in a timely and cost-effective manner.
- Review plans accompanying applications for Part 9 building permits to ensure structures comply with B.C. Building Code, TWN Laws and Bylaws, and other applicable design standards.
- Provides interpretations, explanations, and advice on problems, unusual projects, and preliminary development proposals with architects, engineers, contractors, owners, TWN staff, and various other internal and external contacts.
- Administers and coordinates the processing of building permit applications through relevant TWN departments and other stakeholders.
- Identifies the need for additional submissions and approvals such as specialist reports.
- Prepares draft building permits and other permits and recommends the issuance of Part 9 building permits to the Director of Public Works.
- Inspects Part 9 projects during and after construction, alterations, or repair to ensure compliance with approved plans, established laws, acts, codes, standards, and regulations.
- Prepares other permits as necessary for construction projects, for example, temporary street use permits, harvesting permits, etc.
- Administers the permitting process from application to issuance including record keeping, budget management, scheduling, planning and permit fee collection.
- Researches and develops administrative processes, policies, and plans to improve efficiencies in permitting administration.
- Prepares reports and recommendations as directed by the Manager of Lands and Director of Public Works.
- Keeps up to date on the latest technologies in building and civil construction.
- Other related duties.
- Post-secondary education in building technology or related discipline, or a combination of education & experience resulting in a CTech. or AScT. designation.
- Regular Member in good standing with the Building Officials Association of British Columbia (BOABC) with a current level of Level 1 Building qualification from the BOABC.
- 2-3 years of plan checking/building inspection experience in a government setting.
- Eligibility for Level 1 Plumbing qualification from the BOABC is an asset.
- Demonstrated ability to prioritize, plan, and manage workloads.
- Sound knowledge of workplace health and safety requirements and practices.
- Demonstrated ability to develop and manage work-related records and reports.
- Demonstrated written and verbal communication skills.
- Demonstrated ability to engage effectively with internal and external stakeholders.
- Cognizant of differences between local, provincial, and First Nation governance practices.
- Must successfully pass a criminal record check.
- Must have a class 5 driver's license.
- Strong oral and written communication skills, as well as the ability to utilize quantitative and qualitative problem-solving skills.
- The ability to work alone and take the lead when hurdles arise or when tasks require completion.
- Ability and willingness to learn.

- Knowledge of and experience within Tsleil-Waututh or another First Nation culture will be considered an asset.
- Knowledge of legal codes, building codes, government regulations, etc. related to public works and residential construction.
- Working knowledge of reading site plans and construction drawings.
- Knowledge of relevant safety codes and regulations.
- Intermediate knowledge of Microsoft Office programs (Word, Outlook, and Excel).
- Knowledge of budgets related to construction management.

Working under the direction of the Manager of Lands, the Building Official is responsible for three key aspects of on-reserve land development projects:
The Building Official will be working in a fast-paced environment and must be detail-oriented and comfortable partnering with and leading cross-functional business and technical teams.
