Position Summary
Location:250, 4 Versailles Avenue, St. Albert (6 min from Anthony Henday via Ray Gibbon Drive)

Late March 2024 (or as early as February for the right person)
The centre chef / cook is the head of the food service at the centre, reporting to the centre Director, and with a Dishwasher/Kitchen support person to assist under your direction (dishes, food prep, stock, etc.). In this role, you will lead the provision of the food service, including the day-to-day cooking, weekly food ordering, food/supply stocking, collaborating on menu adjustments, and ensuring strong food safety and sanitization.
As a key part of the team, you'd be appreciated and welcomed into an professional environment with people who care about you and supporting you in your work.
Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
- Prepare food service each day (two snacks, one lunch) adhering to high safety and sanitization standards
- Collaborate with centre Director and/or Owner to update menu seasonally to ensure variety and that it follows the Canada Food Guide
- Follow meal and snack routines / schedule, and collaborate on adjustments as needed
- Prepare meals and snacks in proper portions (children are not wanting more, while limiting waste)
- Understand dietary needs and/or allergies for individual child and adjust meals as needed
- Engage with families and colleagues, as required, to answer questions or discuss food service
- Develop grocery lists in a costeffective manner each week
- Receive food supplies store properly (ensuring FIFO, stored promptly)
- Lead and guide Dishwasher/Kitchen support in the performance of their role daytoday, and participate in their annual performance evaluation with the centre Director
- Ensure safe food storage, cooking, and disposal including (but not limited to): taking and recording temperatures of food, fridges, freezers, following FIFO, measuring and recording sanitizer concentration, foods are labelled and stored, etc.
- Oversee kitchen cleaning, organizing, sanitizing, and monitoring and reporting any maintenance required for equipment
- Follow proper personal hygiene, hand washing, dress appropriately (footwear, and wearing a clean apron and hair net each day (provided by Hopscotch)
- Be aware of job hazards and take necessary precautions for own health and safety and that of others
Job Requirements:
- Food safety certificate approved in Alberta to meet Section 31 of the Food Regulation
- Clear Criminal Record Check including a vulnerable sector search
- Ability to lift 45lbs minimum frequently
- Repetitive use of upper body, reaching overhead, able to be on feet for duration of shift
- Knowledge of Canada Food Guide
- Knowledge (and/or willingness to learn) of applicable food regulations and codes in Alberta: Food Regulation (Public Health Act), Alberta Food Retail and Foodservices Code (2022), Health and Safety Guide for Operators of Child Care Facilities
As asset, or willing to obtain:
- Post secondary education in culinary / food service (not required, but an asset)
- Knowledge or previous experience working in a child care centre
- First aid certification
- Valid WHMIS Certification
- Fire Extinguisher training
