Brazeau County is seeking a full-time
Heavy Equipment Operator to join our Public Works Maintenance team.


The Heavy Equipment Operator's primary responsibility is to operate medium and heavy-weight equipment to support the maintenance of county roads and municipal infrastructure.

The Heavy Equipment Operator is a key contributor to the department's operational deliverables.


Responsibilities:


  • Operates heavy equipment such as single trucks, tandem trucks with pup trailers, tandem trucks with snowplow and wing attachments, gradall, graders, excavators, frontend loaders, backhoes, skid steers, cats, and mediumduty ag tractors while performing various road maintenance functions in the summer and snow and ice removal in winter.
  • Services and performs minor maintenance on assigned equipment.
  • Logs hours and complies with the _Traffic Safety Act._
  • Performs various labourer duties as required.
  • Hauls and unloads various types of materials such as gravel, earth, asphalt, water, and road equipment in designated areas for maintenance and construction as required.
  • Adheres to guidelines as set out in Brazeau County's policies and administrative directives, and the Collective Bargaining Agreement.
  • Accountable for working in compliance with the _Alberta Occupational Health and Safety Act,_ regulations, and codes, and participates in the Health and Safety Program.
  • Overtime and weekend work will be required as necessary for operational needs.
  • Shift work may be implemented as required, including emergency response callouts.
  • To undertake any other reasonable duty, commensurate with the classification and responsibility of the position, across the department to meet service priorities and business continuity requirements.
  • May be required in the event of a municipal emergency to support the emergency operations centre and incident action/recovery plan.

Competency Areas:

Education/Training:

  • High School Diploma or equivalent.

Licenses/Certifications/Designation:

  • A valid Class 1 with Air Endorsement Driver's License is an asset, and a Class 3 with Air Endorsement may be considered.
  • A satisfactory Five-Year Commercial Driver's Abstract is required.

Experiences/Knowledge/Skills:

  • Minimum three years' tandem truck experience is required.
  • Minimum three years' experience operating heavy equipment including hoe, cat, and grader is required.
  • Ability to operate other equipment including loaders is considered an asset.
  • A strong service focus with good verbal and written communication skills are required to communicate effectively.
  • Ability to carry out physical labour.

Working Conditions:

Physical Requirements:

  • This role requires sitting for extended periods while driving as well as regular, frequent and sustained peeks of concentration throughout the day. Labourer activities require considerable physical effort such as moving, standing, lifting, or pulling awkward objects.
Shift and Rate of Pay

  • Nonsupervisory
  • Union Full-Time Permanent, 40 hours per week
  • Hours of Work per Collective Agreement; Monday to Friday 7:30 am to 4:00 pm
  • Rate is Grid 7A 7D ($32.33 $37.58 per hour).
  • The probationary period applies to new employees.
  • Area of work encompasses Brazeau County.
