Description

The Screed Operator's main purpose is to Operate the controls on the free-floating screed which is attached to the paver vehicle to control the quantity and consistency of asphalt that is deposited; estimating overall quantity for the project along with the quantity needed to achieve the correct grade in the finished surface, as well as to promote and participate in the Goal Zero initiative.


Key Responsibilities:


  • Positively participate in the Company safety program and adhere to all safety requirements.
  • Operate valves to regulate flow of material at a specific rate.
  • Signaling Asphalt Paving Machine Operator to start and stop paving machine.
  • Observe distribution of material over road surface to ensure uniform distribution.
  • Turn handwheel to set angle and depth of screed.
  • Use depth gauge to verify depth of specifications of compacted asphalt.
  • Operate paver and control asphalt delivery and placement to mitigate mix segregation.
  • Discuss and plan daily project paving procedures and goals to maximize productivity and workmanship.
  • Operate other equipment and perform groundwork as required.

Knowledge/Skills:


  • Knowledge of paving equipment and paving process.
  • Knowledge of proper machine startup and shutdown.
  • Knowledge/ experience with setup, operation and maintenance of paver auger feed and automatic grade control system.
  • Willing to learn and take direction.
  • Able to perform physical/manual labour for extended periods of time.
  • Able to communicate well with coworkers.
  • Must have a valid driver's license (class 5).
  • Able to work under pressure in some situations.
  • Able to meet all safety requirements and applicable safety policies.
  • Able and willing to work overtime as required.
  • Must be reliable.
  • Must exhibit a strong work ethic.
  • Must have strong regard for ethics.
  • Ability to meet and adhere to all safety requirements and applicable safety policies, including preemployment drug, alcohol, and medical testing.
  • Must maintain active membership with the International Union of Operating Engineers (IUOE), Local 955.

Experience/ Education:


  • 57 years of experience in the paving industry.
