Primary Purpose


The Writing Coach supports students in the pursuit of learning success with one-on-one and written feedback, as well as contributing to non-credit workshops to improve academic and business writing.

At University Canada West, the Centre for Teaching Excellence helps students transition to achieve their academic pursuits by providing resources, training, services, and individual assistance as needed.

The part-time Writing Coach is knowledgeable about academic writing structures and business writing and knows how to coach students to identify their own errors and pursue self-correction so they can improve their skills.

The skills of a writing coach go far beyond editing and proofreading, as the Writing Coach is really tasked with helping students to understand how they can improve their own skills and what steps they should take to strengthen future submissions.


In addition, the Writing Coach will have some background in English as a second language, so that they can identify persistent errors and offer resources that students can use to hone their ability to complete writing assignments successfully.

The successful applicant is a strong cross-cultural communicator who can adjust and adapt to different study styles and levels, but consistently offers a safe and judgment-free atmosphere and allows participants to be open about their growth areas and enjoy the process of seeking help.

They should be skilled at encouraging students while also being able to provide constructive feedback when necessary. They should have the critical thinking skills to know how much feedback and support are required in different circumstances.

The Writing Coach will also keep detailed records and analyze student performance in order to suggest, plan and develop further opportunities for skill development.

They work with the Learning Success team collaboratively and maintain effective working relationships with other student services partners (e.g. Faculty, Library, Student Services, etc.).


Specific Responsibilities

  • Manages and maintains an electronic calendar where both written and facetoface feedback appointments can be booked.
  • Provides measured encouragement and feedback for students and connects them with appropriate resources.
  • Creates a safe atmosphere where students can openly discuss their difficulties.
  • May be called upon to create and/or conduct workshop content that helps enhance student transition and academic success.
  • Uses technology to record and analyze the common issues that students are facing in order to suggest, plan and develop opportunities for skill development.
  • Coordinates with faculty to help provide students with clarity on how to improve the quality of their submissions.
  • Helps students to create plans for growth and development by providing direction and access to resources.
  • Promotes our writing coach services or Learning Success workshops within the classroom if requested.
  • Collaborates and builds rapport with university faculty, and staff that facilitates, invites and deepens the development and use of available student support services

Position Requirements

Competencies:


  • Strong written communication skills (with some experience in business and academic writing)
  • Ability to establish and maintain interpersonal relationships with students
  • Ability to analyze writing in a timely fashion and effectively communicate issues to students
  • Ability to motivate and encourage and also deliver feedback with empathy and compassion
  • Studentfocused orientation with a desire to help others succeed in reaching their goals
  • Ability to use virtual learning platforms (Teams, Zoom, etc.) professionally and effectively
