English Language Learner - Itinerant Specialist (K-12)

(Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday or may be flexible)

Position Description:

This is an itinerant specialist position that will provide English Language support to students at the elementary and middle school levels, and predominantly at the primary grades that have experienced significant recent growth.

The role of the ELL specialist teacher is to work collaboratively with classroom teachers, support teachers, settlement workers in schools (SWIS), Education Assistants, interpreters, and parents to ensure success for each student.

The ELL specialist teacher is responsible for following BC Ministry ELL Policy and Guidelines for items including but not limited to reporting, assessing, and maintaining regular contact logs that document service.

Preferred Qualifications:

Experience working in early learning and/or course work specializing in early learning

Coursework and/or experience in teaching English as a Second Language (minimum three upper level post-secondary courses preferred)

Methodology and appropriate approaches for teaching ELL

Applied linguistics

First and second/additional language acquisition/learning

Language assessment/testing theory and practice

Cross-cultural communication, understandings, sensitivity, and strategies

Multicultural studies

Adapting instruction to meet the diverse language needs of students
