The Department of Economics ranks among the top economics departments internationally and is ranked number one in Canada.

Nearly 70 per cent of all students take at least one course in economics during their undergraduate studies and our faculty is committed to educating and inspiring them all.

Teaching and research in our department span a wide range of fields including theory, applied data analysis and econometric methodology.

Located in the downtown core of Canada's largest city, our department is immersed in a rich environment of rapidly expanding business and financial capital.


Under the general direction of the Chair, the Communications Officer is responsible for designing, developing and executing all of the department's communications and marketing materials.

The incumbent will be pro-active and creative in pitching story ideas to promote the department's strategic objectives to internal and external stakeholders.


Your responsibilities will include:


  • Overseeing tasks related to the production and dissemination of communications/marketingmaterials
  • Writing and editing targeted communications to support strategic initiatives; researching and recommending initiatives that advance priorities and initiatives
  • Advising on social media trends and platforms to enhance digital communication strategies; keeping wellinformed on communication and marketing trends and best practices
  • Researching, recommending, and writing stories that advance priorities and initiatives
  • Conducting interviews with leaders, faculty, staffand students for external and internal publication
  • Developing content for marketing and/or promotional materials
  • Implementing a digital media plan that supports marketing/communications strategy
  • Fostering positive relationships with stakeholders, research centres, faculty and alumni

Essential Qualifications:


  • Bachelor's Degree in public relations, communications, marketing or journalism, or an acceptable combination of equivalent experience.
  • Minimum four (4) years of recent and relevant experience in communications, journalism, or marketing focused position, preferably in a postsecondary environment
  • Demonstrated experience writing articles (feature and news), researching and pitching stories, and interviewing faculty, researchers, students and alumni to promote departmental activities and achievements
  • Proven track record of recommending ideas and implementing communication plans for a diverse audience
  • Demonstrated work experience managing content for websites, newsletters and social media platforms
  • Demonstrated experience and understanding of social and multimedia strategies, tools, channels, trends, and capabilities
  • Experience building and maintaining strategic partnerships with internal and external stakeholders
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills in English
  • Demonstrated advanced skills in MS Office (Microsoft Word, PowerPoint, Outlook, Teams)
  • Skilled in the use of Adobe Creative Suite (Photoshop, InDesign, Illustrator)
  • Demonstrated experience with Content Management Software and web analytics
  • Experience with programming in HTML, CSS, and PHP
  • Demonstrated working experience with social media tools (LinkedIn, Facebook, Instagram, Twitter) to promote initiatives and events
  • Ability to demonstrate a high level of initiative, accuracy, and organizing work effectively and establishing priorities
  • Ability to work effectively in a team environment and deal effectively and professionally with faculty, students, alumni, staff, media, and other internal and external stakeholder

Assets (Nonessential):


  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills in Spanish are an asset, as this position will help promote departmental research projects to partners in Latin America
