Career Planning Service

The Career Planning Service (CaPS) supports McGill students and recent alumni in the exploration of their career options. This includes not only internships but also permanent, part-time, and summer job searches.

CaPS also help students develop lifelong career management skills by providing workshops, individual advising, a comprehensive job posting service, and an extensive Career Resource Centre.

Position Summary:

The McGill Career Planning Service (CaPS) supports undergraduate and graduate students in exploring their career options and increasing their employability through access to meaningful employment and skills building experiences and the development of lifelong career management skills.

CaPS provides and oversees a wide variety of resources and tools to help students search for part-time / summer jobs, internships and post-graduation opportunities, including the myFuture platform and the Co-Curricular Record, with the goal of helping students become career-ready now and for their future.

Reporting to the Associate Director (Career and Professional Development), the Career Advisor will provide individual and group career advising including, but not limited to, conversations that support their career and identity exploration, values, interests, and skills, and how these relate to the world of work.

This role will also contribute to a range of programming opportunities for students to develop their career readiness skills while enhancing their co-curricular and employment experiences.

Primary Responsibilities:

Provides individual and group advising services to graduate students from diverse backgrounds on the downtown and Macdonald campuses, on career exploration, career decision making, skills acquisition and job search strategies including how to perform research on potential employers across academic, NGO, governmental and industry sectors.
Develops and delivers presentations and interactive workshops on topics of academic and nonacademic job search, career development, experiential learning and career (life) design both on and off campus (also includes topics such as; Academic job market preparation, goal setting and career planning, skills and values identification, selfassessment, LinkedIn and other social media networking, proactive and creative job search techniques, CV writing, interview skills, adapting to the Canadian workplace, networking, etc.).
Builds, delivers and cocreates programming and events (inperson and virtual) that cater to the unique career needs of graduate students as well as online learners.
Engages in development of new resources and programs primarily for graduate students and postdocs, including guides, videos and other online resource material.
Coach students to connect with alumni mentors and other professionals currently employed in their target industry.
Manages and/or participates in career fairs, orientation, networking/recruitment events, recruiting guest speakers, industry panel discussions, conferences and other careerrelated events.
Develops collaborative working relationships with partners and stakeholders within communities served.
Participates in learning opportunities, new developments, and trends in the field of career development and experiential learning, vocational guidance and labour market, the current employment situation for students and trends in the job market, both in Canada and abroad.
Compiles statistics, writes reports and proposals, as required.
Participates as part of a Programming Team (e.g., career advisors, skills advisors, leadership skills advisor). Replaces and assists colleagues, as required.

Experience

Three (3) years' experience in career / vocational guidance field with particular emphasis on building and delivering career development programming and advising students one-on-one.

Other Qualifying Skills and/or Abilities

Master's degree in counselling psychology, orientation, higher education or related field, with experience working and supporting graduate students and postdocs. Teaching and/or Research experience at a University level an asset.
Membership in the OCCOQ or OPQ a strong asset.
Proven ability to conduct a wide array of innovative programs and services for graduate student population seeking to explore careers both inside and outside of academia.
Expertise working with one or more specific populations including Indigenous, international or other marginalized populations, an asset.
Able to support individuals from diverse communities drawing upon personal lived experience, formal training and previous work experience. Lived experience with diverse communities is a strong asset.
Proven experience collaborating with student associations and professors to foster awareness and appreciation of the value of diversity and inclusion within career education.
