We are looking for a Textile Conservator


As a
Textile Conservator, you provide conservation expertise to, and work collaboratively with, exhibition project teams, collections, curatorial and other staff, in the area of têxtile conservation.

You design and carry out complex treatments for historic and modern têxtile artefacts, for the purpose of access or collections care.

You carry out preventive conservation actions including inspecting and monitoring artefacts, reviewing exhibit plans and facility reports; and you organize, instruct and supervise the activities of personnel in the ongoing care and conservation of Museum collections and other objects in support of the various public programs and other functions of the Museum.

This position is a one-year leave cover, with an anticipated start date in October 2023.

Relevant experience in:


  • Working with a specialization in têxtile conservation, including physical maintenance, preservation, conservation needs assessment, as well as recommendations on artifact treatment;
  • Working within an exhibit team;
  • Directing contractors and/or students in the performance of treatments and other conservation activities/projects;
  • Writing reports and providing workshops or presentations on related conservation topics;
  • Working with Indigenous collections (an asset).

Knowledge of:


  • Textile conservation;
  • The scientific theories, principles of conservation;
  • Processes and practices in the field of artifact conservation;
  • Occupational health and safety principles and practices;
  • Techniques and materials used in the production of historic and modern têxtile artefacts, such as found in the CMH collection (an asset).

Working Conditions:


  • Ability to lift up to 15 kg;
  • Ability to employ and work in personal protective equipment (PPE);

Professional designation(s) required:


  • Member of the Canadian Association of Professional Conservators is an asset (CAPC)

Compensation:
E6 ($71,173 to $88,080) (Under review)


Status:
Temporary, Full-Time Position (# 8683)


Location: 100, Laurier Street, Gatineau, Quebec and possibility of hybrid work according to the needs of the position
