The Alberta Electric System Operator (AESO) is responsible for the safe, reliable, and economic planning and operation of the Alberta Interconnected Electric System.

We are looking for a talented professional to join the Commercial Management team.

Accountabilities of our team include managing a diverse portfolio of commercial contracts and establishing and maintaining excellent customer relationships from contract execution through the contract lifecycle.


Reporting to the Director, Commercial, you will be a people leader who oversees a team of Commercial Specialists and Analysts in optimizing a portfolio of commercial agreements with sophisticated counterparties.

These agreements include those originating from the AESO's Renewable Electricity Program, the Fort McMurray West transmission project, and a suite of ancillary services to ensure the reliable and economic operation of the Alberta electricity grid.

This full-time opportunity offers a competitive salary, and a variable pay program.

Accountabilities include:

  • Lead, coach, mentor, and develop a team of commercial professionals.
  • Develop commercial negotiating strategies with sophisticated counterparties.
  • Optimize the value and manage risks of existing commercial agreements.
  • Provide commercialrelated advice and communication to/with internal and external stakeholders.
  • Lead and work with crossfunctional teams to resolve commercial matters.
  • Ongoing management of ancillary services contracts and maintenance of commercial records.

You have:

  • Postsecondary graduate degree in engineering, science, economics, or business. Relevant graduate degree would be an asset. 10+ years' experience in a commercial management role; commercial experience in the power/electricity or oil and gas industry is a strong asset.
  • A combination of education and experience will be considered.
  • Strong knowledge of the Alberta electricity market.
  • Strong legal working knowledge.
  • Experience in negotiating within existing commercial agreements.
  • Experience leading internal teams (formal and informal).
  • Ability to articulate complex ideas and concepts to a range of targeted audiences.
