  • Prairie Beginnings _is a tenweek summer program that offers culturallyinclusive activities to children and families from Regina's refugee community. With an emphasis on supporting the most recent arrivals to Canada, the program's primary goal is to promote mental wellness and mitigate the trauma experienced by diverse refugee populations. Delivered through the Faculty of Social Work at the University of Regina, the program utilizes a strengthsbased model to foster empowerment and capacity building, and enhance resiliency toward successful community integration.

Position Summary:


The position of Junior Instructor, under the direction of Senior Coordinator collaborates with fellow junior instructors to plan, organize, supervise, and evaluate culturally-inclusive activities in specific areas such as physical activity and sports, the arts (music, drama, and visual), and social recreation (field trips, group work).


Key Responsibilities:


  • Understand and implement Prairie Beginnings Summer Program policies and procedures, including disciplinary procedures. Be consistent in enforcing the policies and procedures;
  • Ensure participants are provided with the best experience possible through a wide variety of activities;
  • Ensure opportunities and activities are enjoyable and inclusive of all participants;
  • Ensure the safety of participants at all times and quality in programs at all times;
  • Provide leadership, instruction, and supervision of children in field, gym, lab &/or art activities;
  • Establish a good rapport with all participants, junior instructors, parents, and volunteers; and,
  • Provide regular feedback and suggestions to program administrators on how to improve the program.

Additional Responsibilities:


  • Ensure daily lessons/activity plans are prepared by well in advance. Have back up plans in place in case of schedule changes;
  • Participate in organization of first day assembly and last day closing festivities;
  • Attend weekly staff meetings and orientation;
  • Wear the appropriate uniform (staff tshirts) daily; and,
  • Other duties as assigned.

Health and Safety:


  • Create a safe environment for all participants;
  • Be aware of all safety risks and record all injuries;
  • Prepare all equipment requisitions and ensure the equipment you are using is safe;
  • Prepare and check class lists to determine if any children have medical conditions that may limit participation;
  • Complete a record of attendance on a daily basis;
  • Supervise all children before and after classes, ensuring that all children are out of the building and have transportation home; and,
  • Report any staff, participant, or volunteer accidents/incidents to the Senior Coordinator, will fill out a report, and follow all emergency procedures.
Position Requirements


Position Requirements:


  • Minimum one year of University education;
  • Preference given to applicants in the Faculty of Social Work, the Faculty of Education or the Faculty of Kinesiology & Health Studies;
  • CPR and First Aid certifications;
  • Experience working directly with school aged youth;
  • Interest and/or experience working with refugee communities;
  • Ability to plan and implement quality programs for youth and parents;
  • Excellent organization and communication skills;
  • Ability to work collaboratively;
  • Flexible, enthusiastic and creative;
  • Understanding of Prairie Beginning's Mission Statement and values; and,
  • Criminal Record Check.
Physical Demands Pay Grade CUPE Phase 2 Salary Range $ $22.98 hourly Status Term Work Hours

Term Dates:
May 29th - August 30th

Tuesdays and Saturdays:
June 3, 10, 17, 24, July 8, 15, 22, 29, August 12, 19, 26

7 hrs/day
