Our Invest Vancouver (Regional Economic Prosperity Service)

Department is seeking a Research and Data Analyst who will be responsible for conducting quantitative and qualitative research on various economic development topics to achieve a better understanding of the underlying competitive advantages of the Metro Vancouver region and factors impacting the region's economic growth:

gap analysis of key sectors; regional firms and innovation ecosystem; challenges and barriers to success for firms operating in the key sectors; labour, capital market and investment trends.

The Research and Data Analyst will work closely with the other members of the Data, Research and Policy team to coordinate and participate in research activities, analyze gathered data, and articulate insights into reports, presentations and other narratives that can be understood by various audiences.

The Research and Data Analyst will act as a resource to staff for support on all quantitative research, data gathering, analysis and visualization.

The Research and Data Analyst will collaborate across the Invest Vancouver teams on the creation of infographics and materials for the web, social media and other materials.

This role:


  • Researches, identifies, develops and compiles quantitative and qualitative data from a variety of primary and secondary sources; gathers quantitative and qualitative data through various sources such as Statistics Canada, BC Stats, surveys, focus groups, and interviews; researches secondary sources such as literature reviews, online sources, internal and external databases.
  • Conducts indepth data analysis and interpretation to identify key themes, factors, trends and insights to inform the formulation of research findings and recommendations; identifies data gaps and develops an action plan to obtain required information.
  • Prepares written reports to communicate findings on a variety of economic topics and issues of strategic importance; prepares graphic representations of data such as charts, graphs, and maps ensuring trends and patterns in data are easily understood by various audiences; participates in the formulation of research and recommendations to address identified challenges and barriers for economic prosperity.
  • In collaboration with senior members of the department, works with a variety of contacts such as internal working groups and industry representatives from government, business, and academic institutions on regional issues and initiatives; attends meetings related to strategic sectors and economic issues.
  • Liaises and maintains effective working relationships across functional areas to enable information sharing and collaboration; works with internal and external stakeholders to participate in key messaging.
  • Answers enquiries related to departmental projects and regional initiatives.
  • Performs related work as required.

To be successful, you have:


  • Bachelor's Degree in business, economics or other related discipline, supplemented by or including courses in research and analytical methods, plus demonstrated experience in conducting research, data analysis, data visualization and technical writing; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Considerable knowledge of the principles, practices, methods and techniques applicable to the work.
  • Considerable knowledge of departmental functions, objectives and policies.
  • Considerable knowledge of information, tools and resources applicable to the work.
  • Sound knowledge of research design and qualitative and quantitative research methods.
  • Critical thinking and analytical skills, data analysis and evaluation related to the work.
