Field Health & Safety Specialist

Public Works - Transportation

Regular Full-Time

Salary Range:
$84,335 - $105,417 per annum

Location: 2 Copper Road, Brampton


Hours of Work: 35 hours per week


This position is responsible for implementing, enforcing, and monitoring all aspects of the Public Works Divisional occupational health and safety management system at the field level to ensure legislative compliance with the Occupational Health and Safety Act and relevant health and safety laws.


The Health and Safety Field Specialist educates staff, implements, and reinforces compliance with all Region of Peel, departmental, and divisional policies, procedures and practices relating to occupational health and safety.

What you will do_**

  • Implement and manage the occupational health and safety management system for Public Works Divisions for office staff and at the field level.
  • Provide expert interpretation and solutions to implement legislation, standards, codes and internal policies and procedures.
  • Ensures contractor compliance with the Region's policies and procedures.
  • Provide recommendation to people leaders regarding safe work practices.
  • Coordinating and performing workplace observations and developing solutions to ensure compliance.
  • Assist with quality assurance and quality control of hazard analysis in Public Works.
  • Partners with relevant roles in educating, establishing, and implementing the requirements of the ISO 45001 standard; across Public Works field activities.
  • Develop and deliver Training for staff on health and safety topics.
  • Coordinating and performing workplace audits and observations.
  • Preparing reports, document creation/management, maintaining records, and making recommendations on safe work practices.
  • Investigating workplace incidents and preparing recommendations for compliance.
  • Participating in the Public Works Joint Occupational Health and Safety Committee and divisional meetings as appropriate.
  • Respond to health and safety requests from Public Works teams and provide support in identifying and implementing solutions.
  • As required, assists leaders and the H&S Associates with incident investigation for reporting to the Ministry of Labour and other government representatives.
  • Other related duties, as assigned.
**_ What the Role Requires_

  • A relevant degree/diploma or certificate in Occupational Health and Safety and a Canadian Registered Safety Professional designation, or Canadian Registered Safety Technician designation is required.
  • Minimum 5 years related industry experience, including experience working in and providing health and safety direction in a unionized environment.
  • An equivalent combination of education and experience may also be considered.
  • Thorough knowledge of relevant health and safety acts, codes, legislation and other provincial regulations.
  • Experience in establishing and implementing requirements of management system standards; either CSA Z1000/Z45001, ISO 18001 or ISO 45001 is desirable.
  • Experience in leading continuous improvement and change management initiatives are desirable.
  • Incident investigation and conflict resolution skills.
  • Excellent interpersonal, research, analytical, time management and organizational abilities.
  • Effective verbal and written communication, facilitation and presentation skills.
  • Experience in a construction environment considered an asset.
  • Possession of a valid Ontario Driver's License and regular access to a vehicle for site visits.

Work Mode & Job Location:

In this role you will have the ability to work remotely and attend on-site when required based on operational requirements at the 2 Copper Road worksite.

The frequency of on-site activities may vary on a weekly basis and based on operational requirements. Your remote work location must be located within the province of Ontario.
