The Epidemiology and Surveillance Unit is part of the Health Analytics Branch, within the Strategic Policy and Performance Division, and works to provide analytics expertise and develop analytics outputs, allowing Alberta Health and broader health system stakeholders to obtain valuable insights to inform policy, planning, and ultimately improve health system performance and health outcomes.


Role Responsibilities:

Reporting to the Director, Epidemiology and Surveillance, the Health Data Scientist position has four core responsibilities:

  • Use of various analytical methods to deliver important insights gathered from health data so that Alberta Health and other health system stakeholders can make informed decisions for optimal health care system policy.
  • Data management and Analytics Infrastructure including the development of internal capacities for advanced analytics such as data mining, machine learning and statistical modelling.
  • Creation of reports and dashboards/dissemination of data presenting data to those who need it quickly and in clear, concise ways/ sending reports and data to the appropriate individuals or teams for further analysis or immediate use.
  • Development and implementation of a health indicator evaluation framework which goes beyond the development of health indicators and focuses on how to evaluate the quality of indicators as well as ensuring their proper use.

Qualifications:

A university degree in a related field (epidemiology, health sciences, data science, statistics or mathematics), and a minimum of six (6) years of progressively responsible experience

  • Required experience includes:
  • Programming in SAS, R, and/or Python
  • Working with large health system administrative datasets, and data linking
  • Epidemiologic analytic experience
  • Health care system analytic experience
  • Developing and evaluating analytic models
  • Stakeholder engagement and leadership
  • Formal training in data science
  • Strong Geographic Information Systems (GIS) experience
  • Strong programming experience in SAS
  • Strong data acquisition experience
  • Equivalencies may be considered directly related education or experience on the basis of:
  • 1 year of education for 1 year of experience; or
  • 1 year of experience for 1 year of education

This position requires working from the office with an option to qualify for a hybrid work arrangement (in accordance with GOA policy whereby up to two days working from home may be possible).
