Job Description - IRC Specialist

About the Role


The IRC Specialist will also collaborate with a team of professionals whose mandate is to develop, implement and supervise support services, emergency response and other process documentation, as well as plan and execute on operational physical security and incident investigation requirements.

This includes contributing to effective security risk management programs, investigation and intelligence programs, security system solutions, providing special event and personnel protection services, as well as delivering advice, direction, and education.


This position may interact with senior management at the Corporate and Business Group level, peers within Corporate Compliance, Information Security, Risk & Governance, Crisis Management, Business Continuity, Real Estate and Human Resources in the delivery of physical security and emergency response services related to both security and criminal incidents.

This position will interface directly with external government, security, law enforcement and emergency services officials.


What will you do?

  • Working in a fastpaced environment, you will execute daytoday PSOC operations, including incident intake, triage and responses to physical incidents, which may or may not affect Sun Life buildings and personnel.
  • Coordinate and execute preliminary investigations related to physical incidents, in collaboration with physical and cyber security colleagues, as well as other PSOC personnel.
  • Generate timely and accurate tactical intelligence from a variety of sources, in coordination with the Investigation and Intelligence team.
  • Alarm monitoring and response dispatch for Sun Life occupied premises.
  • Engage emergency services such as police, ambulance, and fire departments, as needed.
  • Monitor Sun Life employee travel, including Executive travel, to identify associated risks.
  • Identify and assess international events to understand their potential impact to Sun Life, internationally and domestically.
  • Create and classify detailed incident reports that document event details and evidence.
  • Create and implement knowledge documents, focusing on content verification and accuracy.
  • Work with internal and external industry peers to identify and address physical threats that could affect company assets, including Sun Life buildings and personnel.

What You Need To Succeed

  • Degree or diploma related to physical and/or information security, investigations, or risk management; or comparable professional experience, education or training.
  • Experience working in a Physical Security Operations Centre (PSOC).
  • Minimum of 5 years of experience within a corporate, government security or risk department for a similar organization of comparable size and complexity.
  • A recognized professional designation in physical and/or information security.

Preferred Skills

  • Ability to accurately gather/intake, triage and respond to physical security incidents, as well as assessing the impact to people and buildings.
  • Analytical thinking with a curious mindset.
  • Equally comfortable following detailed instructions as making decisions in the absence of information.
  • Understanding of organizational priorities and relationships.
  • Experience with physical and/or information security (e.g., incident workflow management, cyber threats, access control and video management, perimeter/interior intrusion detection, risk assessment software, etc.).
  • Strong written and verbal communication, organization, strategic thinking, and planning skills.
  • Thrives in a fastpaced and sometimes stressful environment.
  • Ability to attend to tense and high stress situations.
  • Demonstrates sensitivity to issues of ethics, diversity, equity, and harassment in the workplace.
  • Strong collaboration skills with a selfstarter mentality.
  • Introductory knowledge of the Intelligence Cycle, as well as investigative principles, protocols, practices, and industry standards (i.e., interview and evidence handling skills) would be an asset.
  • Basic level proficiency (a combination of experience and training) with Open-Source Intelligence (OSINT) would be an asset.
