Job Summary


This position is in the Faculty of Applied Science (APSC) Dean's office, within the Research and Partnerships (R&P) portfolio, on the APSC Grants Team.

This position is responsible for planning, executing and communicating the research funding support processes available to APSC faculty members through the portfolio.

Support processes include identifying and disseminating appropriate funding opportunities, early-stage proposal development, proposal editing and review, resource development (i.e. templates, playbooks) and providing funding-related trainings (i.e. workshops, information sessions).

This role will involve working with APSC researchers, grants and business development staff as well as other internal/external stakeholders to provide services to increase faculty members' ability to secure grant funding from government and other funding sources.

Supported grants currently include CRC, CERC, NSERC DG, with a particular emphasis on the CRC program.

Also, this role will include identifying interdisciplinary research synergies, matching funding opportunities and working with teams of faculty and other stakeholders from project inception, through editing and review, to submission of highly competitive funding proposals.


The position is expected to stay abreast of current funding opportunities, as well as develop and maintain close contacts with funding agencies to provide authoritative and up-to-date grants funding information to researchers, partners, and others.

As APSC is a diverse and interdisciplinary Faculty, a significant majority of the role will involve the development and review of funding proposals from a wide range of programs and on a wide range of topics.


Expected outcomes include increased research funding from grant and partnership opportunities, higher grants success rates, increased participation of APSC faculty in our services, diversification of research funding sources, and increased impact of our Faculty's research.

Organizational Status


This position reports to the Senior Manager, Research Development, and is a key part of the R&P team which includes professionals in grants facilitation and partnership development.

The position interacts with the Faculty of Applied Science executive team and faculty members to understand the research strategies and direction of the Faculty.

This position also engages with internal UBC stakeholders and units as well as external contacts ranging from funding organizations to business development professionals and senior-level academics.

Work Performed

  • Plans, develops, manages and provides authoritative information and support on research funding opportunities to APSC researchers, other stakeholders and administrative staff. Sets priorities and goals for each funding opportunity and establishes support processes for them.
  • Leads and manages the delivery of support programs (e.g., program outreach, project & proposal development, proposal review and editing, resource development), primarily for the Canada Research Chairs (CRC) program, supporting others as required, potentially in the health and social sciences & humanities realms.
  • Contributes/assists team members with proposal review and editing of a wide range of grants on an _ad hoc_ basis during busy times of the year (i.e. Fall)
  • Proactively identifies funding mechanisms and opportunities offered by national and international authorities and provides support to APSC teams in the development, preparation and submission of highly
  • Working with APSC Partnership Development staff, identifies research synergies and potential funding mechanisms for external partnerships, and recommends these to UBC researchers and their partners. This will include staying abreast of current funding opportunities, informing faculty of such opportunities and the support available for them, as well as maintaining close, collaborative relationships with funders and funding agencies.
  • Contributes to the APSC Grants team communications efforts by disseminating grants
