The Academic Advising & Career Centre (AA&CC) embraces a holistic philosophy in its delivery of integrated academic advising, learning skills, career development and employment coaching services to students.

Your opportunity:


Under the guidance of the Team Lead, Academic Supports, you will work directly with students to assist them with a range of academic and learning skills, including: critical thinking, learning and life management skills, teaching the process of informed and responsible decision-making, and helping students develop and attain their educational goals.

In addition, you will develop and deliver training to students and participate in initiatives and collaborations that promote student success, enhance the student experience, and undertake a commitment to continuous professional learning and development.


With a commitment to equity, diversity and inclusion, you will also have a specialized focus on UTSC's Black students of African descent to provide services that will empower and provide support to achieve academic excellence.

You will be grounded in anti-oppression and equity frameworks and will have a strong understanding of the societal and systemic barriers this student population faces.

You will work on specific outreach initiatives in partnership with other University stakeholders in order to support engagement with the UTSC Black student community and maintain strong relationships across the University.

In addition, you will identify gaps in service delivery and work with the management team and the Equity, Diversity and Inclusion Office to implement positive change.


As a member of the Academic Advising & Career Centre (AA&CC) team, you will support the delivery of integrated academic advising, learning strategies, programming and services delivery for all students and will operate within a cross-functional team working closely with campus partners to support student recruitment, success and retention.

You will also act as a resource and provide confidential assistance to all students. This may include providing information about services, options, relevant policies, and appropriate referrals.

You will be responsible for briefing the management team on emerging issues as they are identified, analyze, and revise documents and policy drafts, research special projects, and identifying and implementing opportunities for improvements.


Your responsibilities will include:


  • Advising students on program and/or course matters by providing options and consequences incorporating personal circumstances impacting academic success and an understanding of an individual's background
  • Probing for information from students to identify barriers they might be experiencing
  • Developing components of learning support programs
  • Advising students on the development of their educational plans
  • Developing student assessment plans to support student learning outcomes and competencies
  • Analyzing statistical information to evaluate the performance of programs and/or partnerships
  • Delivering presentations to promote programs, opportunities and/or initiatives
  • Developing and implementing targeted outreach initiatives (e.g. initiatives to promote and support the diversity of Black students of African descent in order to enhance their academic and student experience)

Essential Qualifications:


  • Master's Degree in student development, education, counselling or an acceptable combination of equivalent education and experience
  • Minimum four years of academic advising and learning skills development experience in a fastpaced postsecondary student services unit
  • Experience with development, deployment and evaluation of programming designed to measure impact
  • Demonstrated knowledge of and ability to learn and utilize theoretical approaches to academic success for student development and for students in transition and/or at risk
  • Possess a studentfocused commitment to excellence and innovation
