Description

The Simulation Program at Unity Health Toronto encompasses all three sites of our organization and allows students, health disciplines and nursing professionals, researchers, administrators and physicians to practice skills in a safe, realistic learning environment using high fidelity human patient simulators, virtual reality and task trainers.

Health care simulation involves a range of activities that share a similar purpose:

to improve patient safety and quality of care, provide interprofessional education opportunities, and increase the effectiveness and efficiency of health care services.


Stakeholders include Unity Health Toronto staff, physicians, students from educational affiliates (The University of Toronto, The Michener Institute of Education at UHN etc.) and external clients.


The Simulation Specialist is responsible for the day-to-day operations of the Simulation Program across all three sites of Unity Health Toronto.

This includes promoting and providing simulation services to support the enhanced delivery of clinical education, quality improvement, research, and assessment activities.

The Specialist is primarily responsible for providing client services and simulation specific technical support for all simulation activities including but not limited to preparation, set up and maintenance of the equipment, and participation in the simulation scenarios.


DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:


  • Collaborate with other team members and Faculty to plan and design (including computer programming, manikin programming, resource allocation, trouble shooting) simulation scenarios to ensure the centre can run at maximal capacity.
  • Preparation of scenarios to ensure best practices are followed, including but not limited to: identifying and programing appropriate manikins, programming software, prebriefing, setting up simulation rooms, procuring/selecting appropriate equipment, creation of props/task trainers, and ensuring all Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada (RCPSC) accreditation standards and guidelines are followed.
  • Participate in scenarios; this may include roleplaying (nurse, MD, family member etc.), ensuring audiovisual (AV) equipment is cued appropriately, and delivering medical information to participants.
  • Troubleshoot during scenarios with respect to technical, resource and education aspects.
  • Use porcine (pig) tissue including: ordering, processing and disposing of tissue.
  • Responsible for the safe and secure collection, editing, storage and dissemination of confidential research and assessment video footage as per Simulation Program and RCPSC guidelines.
  • Teach staff across Unity Health Toronto Basic Life Support (BLS) and other classes as required.
  • Independently perform routine and preventative maintenance for all Simulation Program equipment across three sites.
  • Research and test the usability of medical equipment for simulated activities.

QUALIFICATIONS:


  • Bachelor's degree in a technology or healthrelated field, eg. Biomedical Engineer, Anesthesia Technician, Rehabilitation Sciences, IT or AV Degree
  • Experience with the simulation technology and clinical education
  • General knowledge of LAN Networks and

Microsoft Operating Systems:
Windows XP, Vista, and Mac OSX

  • Knowledge of audio/video equipment and software for recording, duplication, mixing and editing preferred
