Position Title:
Youth Support Worker, Youth Opioids Awareness Program


Location:
Robert Lee YMCA and Tong Louie YMCA (In-Person and remote work) and travel to other locations for in-person delivery.


Term:
Temporary, Part-Time


End:
January 2024 (with the possibility of extension)


Shift:
Tuesday - Saturday (hours based on program needs) with some evenings and weekends.


Hours:0-35 hours per week (dependent on program needs)


Salary:
$26 per hour + Free Gym Membership

Manager, Youth Programs


Nature & Scope:

YOAP will build awareness about opioids usage by providing information sessions about the short-term and long-term effects of opioid use;

  • General Awareness sessions for each age group years old and years old. Using a balanced approach, YOAP will offer awareness raising programming for youth ages of and when if of interest to their parents or adult allies). Each YOAP participant will be provided with information and referral information to treatment services and other community resources that can help with a potential opioids use issue, as a method of further reaching the individuals who might require such help without asking for disclosure of opioids use issues in front of peers. The program will address stigma learning about stigma & how it can be addressed (known facts/ be aware of attitudes/ power of words/ educate others) education about stigma (learning from people who recovered) contactbased education resources for reflection. YOAP will promote wellbeing & encouraging a healthy approach with activities and resources to support.
The Education and Awareness Coordinator will assume responsibility for outreach and promotion initiatives of the program provincially, and will coordinate and deliver YOAP activities (i.e. workshops/webinars, throughout the province in a variety of settings.

Also will connect youth to Health & Fitness activities (within the YMCA and beyond), and encourage access to a variety of online sessions.


Responsibilities:


  • Deliver and facilitate educational webinars and workshops online and in person to youth parents and professionals involved in youth's lives
  • Plan and chair online/in person meetings (youth groups, professionals, national team, etc.)
  • Establish and maintain relationships with school boards, community and youth service providers
  • Develop and implement effective outreach strategies to engage local communities, meet monthly targets and increase YOAP's reach
  • Maintain accurate records and statistics related to the activities undertaken and outcomes achieved and provide monthly reports
  • Create content and support program's online content strategy and online presence
  • Attend and promote opioid awareness in community meetings and events/fairs
  • Research, and maintain up to date knowledge regarding issues and trends related to youth opioid use and report learning
  • Support program's research and development initiatives
  • Follow and implement program's quality assurance measures
  • Demonstrates appropriate behaviours in line with our Mission, Vision and Values as reflected in our YMCA competencies; takes a member focused approach to increase their understanding of programs offered across the Association. Represents the YMCA and the Association in a professional manner
  • Understands the legal responsibilities and moral imperative to report suspected child abuse to Child Protection Services.
  • Understands the importance of the volunteer staff partnership and integrates the value of philanthropy and volunteerism in dealings with members, volunteers, donors and staff.
  • Travel and overnight stay as required
  • Other duties as assigned

Requirements:


  • University degree or college diploma (or equivalent) in Social Sciences, Public Health, Education, Business, Communication, Marketing or other related field is required
  • Experience with outreach activities and strategies is required
  • 12 years of experience in facilitation preferred
  • Experience engaging youth 1524 years of age
  • Excellent writing, editing, and proofreading skills, with the ability to draft and design clear and compelling communications;
  • French language skills an asset
  • Experience in the delivery of public health, prevention and awareness initiatives is an asset
  • Knowledge of opioid awareness and harm reduction principles is an asset
  • Understanding of principles of learning for both youth and adults is an asset
  • Experience in working with youth, sensitivity and knowledge in dealing with youth from different cultural and racial backgrounds and youth with special needs
  • Flexibility regarding assigned work hours, travel and overnight stays
  • Ability to work in an efficient manner with a high degree of independence
  • Experience in online communications, social media or interactive engagement and working with online presentation/meeting platforms
  • Must have a valid driver's li
