Position Summary:


The incumbent orders materials and sets up the materials and equipment for student lab assignments and projects used by the students in the post-secondary Building Renovation, Building Restoration, carpentry apprenticeship, special projects and programs delivered in the carpentry shops under the direction of the Departmental manager or Director.


Key responsibilities:


  • Moves materials from storage areas to working areas for each class using equipment such as dollies, forklift, wheelbarrows, and wagons.
  • Separates waste building materials for recycling and reuse or disposal.
  • Supervises students who wash down masonry areas between lab classes.
  • Directs activities of student workers and occasional parttime workers who are hired to assist the incumbent in any of the above activities.
  • Shovels loose masonry materials such as sand and mortar.
  • Assists students by reinforcing concepts and skills demonstrated by the professors in the lab.
  • Monitors student activities to detect and correct unsafe practices when working in the lab.
  • Provides guidance to individual students on safe operation of handtools and machinery use when observing or when asked by the student.
  • Installs, maintains, and repairs specialized lab equipment.
  • Keeps records related to the operation of the shop/labs such as WHIMIS, maintenance schedules, tool inventories, etc.
  • Conducts ongoing inspections of shop/labs for identification of potential safety hazards and provides proactive solutions.
  • Supervises student workers hired to help with set up for special functions.
  • Interviews and recommends workstudy students for hire.
  • Ensures that sufficient material is on hand for upcoming classes.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Educational and Experience Requirements:


  • Threeyear diploma or degree or equivalent from a recognized postsecondary institution in Building Technology.
  • Additional requirements: carpentry courses.
  • Three years of building/mechanical/technical experience (e.g., carpentry/equipment).

  • Solid problemsolving, organizational, and time management skills; able to set priorities and assign tasks.
  • Demonstrated ability to work both independently and collaboratively with a range of stakeholders.
  • Demonstrated communication, collaboration, teamwork, and interpersonal skills at a professional level.
  • Demonstrated commitment to uphold the College's priorities on diversity and equity.
  • Ability to lift over 20 kg or 44 lbs (i.e., masonry carpentry materials, lumber, power tools, etc.).

Interview process may consist of a practical skills component.
