Reporting to the Manager, Asset Planning, the GIS summer student will provide technical support for ArcGIS and other Asset Management software tools.

The scope includes day-to-day maintenance, and revisions within the Geographical Information System software tools, as well as providing technical and administrative support for departmental initiatives, presentations, training programs and financial forecasting of capital and operating asset maintenance needs.


Responsibilities:


  • Perform data entry, manipulation, verification, gap analysis, georeferencing plans digitizing assets and geoprocessing the data within geodatabases and metadata in ArcGIS and document current GIS processes
  • Modify asset attribute tables, domains, attribute formatting, symbology, unique values for improved visual representations, linkages to other business data, layer structures and user functionality
  • Geo-Reference various objects including aerial photography, engineering drawings, images, legal plans, and other external resource files
  • Assist/provide "help desk" customer service support for GIS users internally and externally with operating partners, and assist in providing training initiatives toward the use of software tools
  • Create and maintain queries, reports, forms, templates and dashboards within the GIS environment to meet the needs of users
  • Maintain linkages between company database and online portal, and publishing feature classes and data ensuring data continuity and consistency
  • Assist various projects including condition assessments, lifecycle analysis, operations and maintenance practices development, capital and operating budget forecasting and the roll out of asset management software solutions; and
  • Build positive working relationships with coworkers, using principles of good customer service and active listening.
Essential Requirements

  • Minimum successful completion of one year and currently enrolled to continue in a diploma program from a recognized college or university in GIS with a Civil Engineering and/or Environmental Design and/or Urban Planning focus
  • Diploma program in the Coop stream preferred
  • ESRI GIS Certifications, or demonstrated progress tracking toward certifications would be considered an asset
  • Minimum, completed first year educational hands on experience or completed coop placement experience in GIS preferably working with physical asset inventories such as municipal services, utilities, buildings and structures using ESRI ArcGIS tools
  • Attention to detail and the ability to learn techniques for data validation needed to support critical information systems, software tools, cost calculations and records management
  • Educational knowledge and hands on experience in ESRI ArcGIS with database design and management including programing scripting (Python) to develop and maintain spatial infrastructure inventory geodatabases
  • Strong computer technical skills enabling data entry, manipulation, and validation in software tools, geodatabases and spreadsheets with the ability to communicate findings, results and explain methodologies used to others
  • Basic ability to interpret engineering structural and site plan drawings, building plans and legal property survey plans
  • Basic awareness of Asset Management philosophies and industry software tools
  • Excellent verbal, written and relationship building and teamwork engagement skills; and
  • Welldeveloped time management skills, understanding the importance of meeting deadlines, and willingness to undertake a variety of tasks and other duties as assigned.
