JOB SUMMARY


Under the general direction of the Manager of Distribution Design, the Supervisor, Distribution Design is responsible for overseeing the design, project management and building of Hydro Ottawa's distribution systems in a timely, efficient, and cost effective manner while meeting budgetary requirements.


MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Accountable for providing timely, efficient, and effective design, costing, and project management for new and modified Hydro Ottawa distribution systems, and customer services.
  • Support the development, implementation, and management of technical standards, new system materials, and procedures for the distribution system.
  • Support staff with technical studies and analysis/status reports and provide recommendations relating to the complete distribution system.
  • Chair and/or take part in internal and external committees as required.
  • Provide training, coaching and mentoring to design staff to assist in their development.
  • Provide effective advice and recommendations on staffing matters.
  • Responsible for developing a team environment amongst peers and subordinates.
  • Participate in discussions, problem solving and issue resolution with customers regarding negotiation.
  • Deal with customer complaints and initiate remedial action.
  • Provide technical support and recommendations for Conditions of Service, external utility/municipal circulations, and third party attachments to internal staff, the City, other utilities, and external standards committee(s).
  • Participate and provide relevant information to external associations as an ambassador for Hydro Ottawa.
  • Assist with development of the distribution asset management plan.
  • Provide technical support with the development and delivery of health, safety, and environment programs.
  • Support all Hydro Ottawa line work to ensure a safe, cost effective manner that protects the environment.
  • Assist in developing and evaluating Request for Proposals (RFP) or Request for Qualifications (RFQ) with major projects.
  • Provide input in the creation of annual and multiyear budgets and business plans for the distribution system.
  • Supervise and develop assigned staff through performance reviews and assist with development plans.
  • Assist and provide recommendations associated with technical processes and equipment failures.
  • Inspects projects and field installations to improve processes.
  • Recommend and deliver training material that supports Hydro Ottawa in managing technically its distribution system and staff.
  • Oversee divisional response and support for O.Reg. 22/0
  • Assist with Project Coach development and implementation.
  • Assign and monitor major projects as required, providing support and reports as required.
  • Schedules, assigns and monitors the project assignments of staff working on distribution, stations, and generation infrastructure.
  • Follow up with project lessons learned and project management improvement as required.
  • Supervise responses to emergency calls including participating in the Emergency Response Organization and On-Call programs.
  • Training of staff to enhance their abilities, skills.
  • Perform other related duties as required.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

  • Professional Engineer, licensed or able to be licensed in the province of Ontario or OACETT certification with a minimum of 6 years electrical utility operational experience and project management.
  • Practical expertise in electrical utility operations and/or trades with 15 years' experience may substitute for academic qualifications, including experience in directing and leading teams.
  • Computer expertise, particularly in MS and system design/project management software.

ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS

  • English language skills essential, Bilingualism (French/English) an asset
