Position Summary:


Under the direction of the immediate supervisor, oversees the day-to-day operations of a facility, a large laboratory or several laboratories.

Organizes, distributes and verifies the work of others and participates in their training. Establishes priorities and schedules of projects. Coordinates execution of projects and service. Prepares quotations. Develops procedures and makes recommendations to improve unit efficiency. Develops methodology. Analyses and interprets data. Acts as resource person, resolves problems and instructs others. Administers accounts. Prepares budget proposals. Maintains equipment.


Major Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Oversees the daytoday operations of a facility, a large laboratory, or several laboratories. Coordinates the execution of experiments, projects, and services. Establishes priorities and ensures adherence to schedules. Ensures efficiency and quality of output.
  • Organizes, distributes, and verifies the work of others, and participates in their training.
  • Participates in the development and implementation of unit procedures and work methods. Makes recommendations to improve unit efficiency including recommendations on staff requirements.
  • Reviews and analyzes project submissions. Advises on feasibility. Establishes time and cost estimates. Prepares quotations.
  • Performs a variety of specialized technical tasks in fields such as chemistry, biochemistry, physiology, histology, toxicology, microbiology, immunology, molecular biology.
  • Acts as resource person, resolves problems and instructs others. Provides technical guidance and assistance concerning work methods, the use of equipment and techniques, and the analysis of results.
  • Reviews, tests, evaluates, and modifies equipment and methodology. Develops methodology. Assesses equipment needs. Coordinates the provision of equipment. Designs and fabricates specialized equipment as required.
  • Maintains equipment and performs minor repairs. Arranges for servicing.
  • Performs accounting functions such as monitoring expenditures, verifying ledgers, and resolving discrepancies. Forecasts costs of supplies, materials, and equipment. Prepares invoices. Prepares budgets or budget proposals.
  • Keeps abreast of new developments in the field to update skills and knowledge.

Additional Responsibilities:

  • Gives demonstrations to support staff and users. Monitors the condition of plants and organisms and responds to cultural, pest and pathogen problems. Interacts with users on an ongoing basis to ensure effective use of the facility. Schedules use of the facility, explains policies, procedures and provides information.
  • As required, performs preventative, prescriptive, and emergency maintenance of facility equipment and systems. Collaborates with the manager in the development and implementation of improvements to the facility's systems and operational protocols.
  • Construct room configuration by adjusting setup elements and assembling experimental arrangements. Additionally, conduct seasonal preparations for greenhouse climate control systems, ensuring heaters and coolers are appropriately set up.

Other Qualifying Skills and/or Abilities:

  • Undergraduate degree in Science or Engineering. Studies in Bioresource engineering or bioengineering is an asset.
  • Mechanical aptitude to perform routine diagnostic evaluations, including troubleshooting, maintenance, and repair.
  • Experience in a technically based work environment equipped with electromechanical equipment and computer control systems.
  • Knowledge of plant culture, greenhouse management, pest management or exposure to controlled environment agriculture preferred.
  • Previous work or research experience in a Phytotron facility is a strong asset.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Must have excellent organizational and problemsolving skills as well as the ability to multitask and work effectively with others in a team environment.
