Description
In addition to performing the duties of the Decontamination Helper, the Decontamination Operator/Shipper will be required to perform some or all of the following duties:

General decontamination work as required, decontamination of equipment and facilities, handling and packaging of radioactive waste, routine contamination checks and monitoring of protective clothing.

Performs cleaning, inspection and testing of containers, overpacks.

Perform routine and special operations with respect to the shipping and receiving of radioactive products to customers as required. Included is inspection of shipping containers and control of the shipping/receiving area.

This position is deemed a Nuclear Energy Worker (NEW).

A Nuclear Energy Worker (NEW) is defined by the Nuclear Safety and Control Act as a person who is required, in the course of the person's business, or occupation in connection with a nuclear substance or nuclear facility to perform duties in such circumstances that there is a reasonable probability that the person may receive a dose of radiation that is greater than the prescribed limit for the general public (1 mSv per year for the whole body).


Key Responsibilities

  • Prepare all outgoing shipments of radioactive and nonradioactive materials including labeling, marking, sealing, final closure and loading in accordance with established procedures and regulations.
  • Receiving incoming shipments of radioactive and nonradioactive materials.
  • Daily cleaning, inspection and testing of containers, inserts and overpacks.
  • Carry out routine and special technical tests and inspections on every container prior to shipment and issue work orders for repair and maintenance if required.
  • Performs general and specific decontamination work as directed to include decontamination of equipment, facilities, surfaces, tools and packaging.

Qualifications
Must have grade 12 or equivalent and normally a minimum of one-year experience as a Decontamination Operator or Shipper.


Additional Requirements

  • Availability to work the required shift(s) and overtime
  • Lift and carry up to 10kgs on a frequent basis
  • Good manual dexterity and grip strength
  • Must be able to lift heavy objects and operate heavy lifting equipment.
  • Push/pull carts with a force of up to 25kgs on an occasional basis
  • Wear a respirator for potentially several hours at a time

Training Required:

Must complete all required training and certification as a Nuclear Energy Worker


Skills and Competencies

  • Must demonstrate communication skills in a team environment and be able to work independently.
  • Fully knowledgeable with decontamination procedures, disposal procedures, radiation hazards, transportation of dangerous goods safety procedures.
  • Must be familiar with operating contamination/radiation detection instruments; understand that different instruments are used for specific isotopes and which instruments are used for these isotopes.
  • Must have knowledge of loading, shipping, unloading and receiving Cobalt Operations Shipments.
  • Must be knowledgeable of licensing requirements and transport regulations and transport regulations for radioactive shipments and receipts.
  • Strong documentation skills and demonstrated ability maintaining accurate records.
  • Experienced in performing calculations with respect to radiation, contamination monitoring equipment and personnel dose.
  • Must be familiar with and able to work with computers and Oracle.
