Job SummaryThe laboratory of Dr. Elizabeth Rideout is looking to hire a Research Assistant/Technician 3 to join the team.
The main responsibilities of the Technician 3 will be to manage and oversee the daily operations and finances of the laboratory.
Emphasis for this position is lab management; however, the Technician 3 will be expected to perform experiments under the guidance of the Principal Investigator (PI).
Organizational StatusThe Technician will report directly to the PI, Dr. Elizabeth Rideout.
They will interact with all laboratory personnel, other faculty, staff and students on a daily basis as well as other Departments within and outside the University.
The Technician will be the lead contact for administrative personnel within the University and outside.Work Performed
- Lab Management Duties_
- Assists with timekeeping for faculty and staff within lab.
- Manages and maintains the lab in the absence of the PI.
- Manages daily operations of the lab with the unit director.
- Assists in supervising and training lab personnel.
- Provides feedback on staff performance for hiring and retaining decisions.
- Purchases equipment and supplies for the lab.
- Monitors and maintains lab finances.
- Keeps detailed records of all purchases, payments, purchase orders.
- Reconciles financial statements and reports variances to the PI on a monthly basis.
- Manages the grant records for the principal investigators: reconciles ledgers and purchase card purchases.
- Creates and manages chemical inventory records.
- Implements and manages procedures for the use and disposal of chemical and biohazardous materials in the laboratory.
- Responsible for coordinating equipment use in the laboratory.
- Presents updates on the progress of some research projects at regular research group meetings.
- Technical Duties_
- Plans and performs experiments, utilizing complex procedures or techniques; troubleshoots problems; collects, records, analyses and interprets data.
- Assists lab members with the design of experiments and/or development of new techniques for laboratories or facilities.
- Provides training to undergraduate students, new and lowerlevel technicians in the use of equipment, techniques and procedures.
- Performs complex technical tasks, such as, catheterizations, necropsies, blood sampling and minor surgical procedures involved in animal surgery.
- Researches, coordinates and performs regular field sampling and analysis for several research projects.
- Coordinates, monitors and ensures the implementation and enforcement of laboratory safety rules and procedures.
- Sets up, tests, operates and maintains common laboratory and other equipment.
- May oversee and direct the work of one or two incumbents in lowerlevel classifications.
- Carries out any other related duties as required in keeping with the qualifications and requirements of positions in this classification.
Exercises a considerable amount of judgment, responsibility, and initiative in determining work procedures and methods, and coordinating the work of the unit.
Works under minimum supervision, receiving specific instructions only on unusual problems or on matters which depart significantly from established policy and procedure.
May have supervisory responsibilities for a small group of employees at lower classifications and may have input into staff selection and performance evaluation.
Completion of a relevant technical program or a university degree in a relevant discipline and a minimum three years of related experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
