The Department of Occupational Science and Occupational Therapy is recognized as an outstanding leader in the provision of graduate education in occupational science and occupational therapy research and in preparing students to learn and practice the knowledge, attributes and skills of the profession of occupational therapy.


The Intelligent Assistive Technology and Systems Lab (IATSL) in the Department of Occupational Science & Occupational Therapy is led by Dr.

Alex Mihailidis, PhD, PEng.

The IATSL lab is a unique multi-disciplinary, multi-centre research team that includes several bioengineers, computer scientists, occupational therapists, speech and language pathologists, neuroscientists, clinicians, and mechanical/electronic technicians.

IATSL is affiliated with many prestigious institutions including the University of Toronto, and KITE - University Health Network.

Funding comes from a variety of corporate and institutional partners, such as the American Alzheimer Association, Alzheimer Society of Canada, and Intel Corporation.

IATSL focuses on the development of autonomous, intelligent computerized devices that can help older adults live more independently. As a Lab Manager, you will provide research, knowledge transfer, and administrative support to the lab. You will work closely with partners at the university along with community stakeholders. Your strong research planning and interpersonal skills will advance the mission and vision of the lab.


Your responsibilities will include:


  • Performing lab experiments that requires great precision and attention to many details
  • Overseeing daytoday operational needs for one or more labs/workshops
  • Modifying experimental processes and implementing more efficient ways to conduct experiments
  • Preparing, assembling and settingup material, equipment and supplies used in teaching and/or research labs including troubleshooting issues with lab equipment and/or workstations
  • Contributing to research findings that are published in academic journals
  • Drafting and submitting documented procedures to the Research Ethics Board (REB) for approval

Essential Qualifications:


  • Bachelor's Degree or acceptable combination of equivalent experience.
  • Minimum three (3) years relevant experience in an academic or hospital environment.
  • Experience overseeing daily operational lab needs, including troubleshooting issues with lab equipment.
  • Experience managing research grants, including a demonstrated understanding of the research granting life cycle and knowledge of research ethics board processes.
  • Experience contributing to research findings published in academic journals.
  • Proficiency in analyzing lab reports.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, both written and oral
  • Ability to work collaboratively in a team environment within a fast pace environment
  • Flexibility in adjusting to changing circumstances; demonstrated multitasking skills; ability to manage multifaceted tasks
  • Demonstrated ability to analyze, problemsolve and exercise independent judgment based on sound principles, and take necessary action, such as software renewal, maintaining lab website, lab equipment purchase etc.
