This position reports to the Principal Investigator.

The Research Assistant will provide support to various research activities for the Person-centred Radiation Oncology Service Enhancement (PROSE) program.

PROSE is aimed to enhance person-centered care measurable by appropriate patient reported experience measures, including but not limited to information, emotional support and care coordination domains.

It is hoped that improvements in practice culture through enhancing person-centred care within the radiation treatment portion of cancer services will have a positive impact on patient experience.


This position will work within the radiation department of the Tom Baker Cancer Centre, and will then move with the team to the Arthur J.E.

Child Comprehensive Cancer Centre.


Summary of Key Responsibilities (job functions include but are not limited to):

  • Establishes and maintains effective, productive relationships with staff, peers, immediate supervisor and senior management within the team and department
  • Manages own time effectively and ensures immediate reports to manager is kept informed of activities, and progress of work
  • Demonstrated strong communication, team and customer service skills, and an ability to exercise judgment within established guidelines
  • Conduct literature reviews and literature summaries
  • Contacting participants, conducting telephone and in home interviews, and ensuring collected data is submitted is accurate
  • Gather patient consent forms
  • Support patient recruitment and data collection for various studies
  • Support the team in retrospectively and prospectively collecting and entering data and managing data sets
  • Prepare technical documents and monitor reports on trend analyses
  • Generate powerpoint presentations on behalf of Principal Investigator and research team, to be used when presenting to various internal and external stakeholders

Qualifications / Requirements:


  • Bachelor Degree in sciences/health sciences required, a background in epidemiology or public health an asset
  • Minimum 2 years of related experience
  • A combination of education and experience will be considered
  • Advanced skills in statistical software programs (eg. SAS, STATA)
  • Intermediate to advanced skills in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Outlook, Excel, PowerPoint), Internet skills
  • Excellent interpersonal and organizational skills
  • Demonstrated ability for professional report writing.
  • Knowledge of research ethics and regulations for granting agencies (eg. Tri Council)
  • Ability to problem solve in complex situations
  • Demonstrated strong communication, team and customer service skills, and an ability to exercise judgment within established guidelines
  • Must be open to learning and development, and be willing to accept new challenges and assignments.
  • A positive attitude and the ability to work independently and as part of a team are critical to success
