Climate Action Plan Implementation Coordinator


Reporting to the Manager of Sustainability, the Climate Action Plan Implementation Coordinator is responsible for coordinating change management initiatives across the campus in service of reaching the Climate Action Plan's goals.

This will include facilitating and supporting working groups and helping groups of stakeholders synthesize their ideas into actionable goals and activities.


The Climate Action Plan Implementation Coordinator is responsible for building capacity amongst staff and stakeholders to support the implementation of the Climate Action Plan.

The incumbent will also help enable accountability and track progress through reporting and communications.


The incumbent will have the skills necessary to support transformational change management, with a focus on sustainability and carbon management.

They will have excellent communications and stakeholder management skills, as well as experience in preparing mandatory and voluntary carbon, waste, and energy reporting, and translating these reports into meaningful communications for student and staff audiences.

This position will work in close coordination with different groups across campus to help support, track, and communicate progress on carbon and sustainability management initiatives.


In 2023, the College approved an ambitious and comprehensive Climate Action Plan (CAP), which sets academic, operational, and research goals to help transform our campus and community to meet the climate crisis, and transition to the low carbon economy.

This includes a goal to reach net zero emissions by 2035.


RESPONSIBILITIES:

The duties of this position will include, but are not limited to the following:

Coordination of the Climate Action Plan

  • Coordinates meetings for CAP Steering Group, as well as CAP Working Groups.
  • Utilizes change management principles, processes and tools to coordinate collaborative projects to create the tools necessary to enable effective energy and carbon reduction projects and sustainability initiatives.
  • Facilities consultation exercises for working groups and helps teams develop action plans.
  • Synthesizes multiple stakeholders' perspectives into coherent goals and actionable tasks.
  • Works in close coordination with working groups to facilitate workshops, learning opportunities, and meetings with external experts and stakeholders as needed.
  • Designs and executes stakeholder engagement activities, including focus groups, surveys, popup activations and other tools.
  • Develops programs for employee capacity building, with support from the Manager of Sustainability and collaborating with Professional Development team in Human Resources to offer sessions.

Communications and Awareness Strategies

  • Develop and maintain internal and external communication channels including social & digital media to disseminate accurate, timely and engaging information to a variety of college stakeholder audiences.
  • Uses knowledge of best practices in science and climate change communications to engage students and staff in climate action awareness building and engagement activities.
  • Collaborate with other college communications and/or public affairs staff to provide support where necessary and ensure consistent, effective communication of Mohawk's brand and values.
  • Act as a point of contact for internal communications staff on activities related to the Climate Action Plan.
  • Leads the completion of reports, plans, presentations and articles; this includes translating technical reports on carbon emissions to information that is digestible for larger audiences, and tracks and reports on progress to date.
  • Plan and execute stakeholder consultation sessions using recognized best practices such IAP2, collective impact, and theory of change, with internal and external parties, often in cooperation with other college departments.
  • Coordinates communications for the Climate Action Plan Steering Group, including coordinating meetings and reporting requirements.
  • Engage with students and staff in meaningful and in some cases confidential conversations, and connect them with the appropriate services both internal and external.
