Job Summary


The Labourer 3 is responsible for the maintenance of all hard/soft outdoor surfaces and fields of play for the Department of Athletics and Recreation at the University of British Columbia Point Grey Campus.

The Labourer 3 performs tasks such as mowing, edging, planting, pruning and other general labour duties as required. Seasonal weekend and evening work as required.

Organizational Status


Athletics & Recreation (A&R) is a department within the VP Students portfolio, with a strong focus on creating an exceptional UBC experience.

The A&R Department has a team of approximately 125 employees, and is led by a strong cross-unit management team.

It services over 60,000 students through recreational programming, 26 varsity teams, 13 competitive club teams, along with thousands of members of the UBC community.

This role will support the Athletics Head Groundskeeper in maintaining the Thunderbird Park and Thunderbird Stadium synthetic and natural grass fields.


Work Performed- Mows lawn and field areas using both a walk mower and a riding mower- Removes leaves and other debris from fields, walkways and perimeter landscape- Prepares soil with standard tools and equipment such as rakes, shovels, hoes, pitch and digging forks, rototillers, etc.- Puts plants, trees and bushes in designated locations- Performs lawn installation, including moving, putting down turf and distributing seed- Waters and distributes fertilizers to plants, trees, bushes, lawns, sports fields, gardens etc.- Moves rocks, gravel and mulch to install and repair pathways and other related garden structures- Cuts and bucks plants, small tree branches using pruners, line/brush trimmers and operates brush chipper for mulching- Moves soil, mulch, plants, unwanted plant material and debris, fertilizers, supplies, tools, equipment and other materials to storage or various locations- Operates standard power equipment, such as walk behind mowers, line trimmers, blowers, hedge trimmers, and lawn edgers to perform soft/hard landscape activities- May be required to drive a truck and use specialty equipment, such as large chain saws, forklift, high lift and other equipment needed for specialized tasks- Carries out routine minor maintenance on small equipment and reports faulty equipment to the appropriate staff.

- Acquires materials and equipment as required for the job in coordination with the Head Groundsperson- Acts upon trouble calls as directed by supervisory staff- Works in a correct and safe manner and follows established policies and procedures- Carries out any other related duties as required in keeping with the qualifications and requirements of positions in this classification

Consequence of Error/Judgement


The position will be under the direct supervision of the Head Groundsperson and failure to follow directions or make inappropriate decisions may result in unsafe playing conditions, service delays and/or increased costs.

Works under general supervision from the Head Groundsperson and from written or oral instructions, blue prints, drawings and work orders.

Qualifications:


  • Secondary school education and/or completion of high school or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Valid Class 5 driver's license with a satisfactory driving record.
  • Experience working with gardening tools and equipment.
  • Experience operating riding mowers, bobcats and/or tractors with attachments including but not limited to aerator, top dresser and overseeder.
  • Ability to lift/move 50 lbs.
  • Ability to follow policies, procedures, and instructions. Works efficiently, always meets deadlines.
  • Ability to work both independently and within a team environment.
  • Ability to develop and maintain cooperative and productive working relationships.
  • Ability to provide quality service to customers in a courteous, patient manner.
  • Experience maintaining sport fields (grass and/or synthetic turf) an asset.
