Reporting to the Supervisor, Waste Collection and/or the Working Foreperson, the Operator/Loader is responsible for the collection of yard waste and/or waste along an assigned route.


Reporting to the Manager, Road Operations and under the direction of the Supervisor, Road Maintenance, Working Foreperson, Lead Hand or designate, the Operator 2 operates various pieces of equipment on scheduled shifts that pertain to winter maintenance activities and works along with an assigned crew when required.


Responsibilities

  • Collect yard waste and/or waste along an assigned route by loading and operating a waste collection vehicle, on a rotating basis, in conjunction with another operator/loader
  • Operate various units of Road Operations equipment listed under Type "A" and "B" equipment
  • Work in accordance with City of Oshawa Safe Work Standards and the Ontario Occupational Health and Safety Act
  • Perform job functions of a Operator Loader as required
  • Perform various duties related to Winter Control and/or Operations Call Board activities
  • Physically work along with an assigned crew when required
  • Perform other related duties as assigned

Requirements:


  • Physically fit and able to perform strenuous work involving considerable effort for extended periods of time
  • Capable of meeting productivity targets for assigned work in a safe manner
  • This position requires picking up between 1535 tonnes of waste daily
  • Possession and maintenance of a valid Ontario Driver's License, minimum Class "DZ", in good standing, and able to pass the Corporation's tests for motor vehicle operation
  • Capable of obtaining and maintaining a minimum Operator 2 internal license
  • Willing and capable of training new operators on various types of equipment
  • Good communication skills and ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions
  • Able to follow and understand a route map and applicable work standards and bylaws which deal with routine and standardized situations
  • Good interpersonal skills and courtesy to deal with the general public and to discuss routine information with colleagues.
  • Must serve on the Operations Call Board in accordance with Article 11.05(c) of the CUPE 250 Collective Agreement and successfully complete all required training necessary to meet operational requirements
  • The job may require scheduled work outside the Waste Collection Division and/or outside the Parks & Environmental Services Branch
  • This position requires you to work evening and night shift
  • The job requires overtime work outside normal working hours and on weekends.
