Position Title

  • Learning Strategist
    Position Summary
  • The Division of Student Success is inviting you to their team as a parttime, term certain Learning Strategist.
  • The Learning Strategist, reporting to the Manager of Student Supports, is part of the Student Supports team at Red Deer Polytechnic. Student Supports works to cultivate mental health and overall wellbeing within the RDP learning community through counselling, capacity building, stigmareduction, accessibility and inclusion services, skill building, promotion, and education.
  • The incumbent plays an integral role in supporting the success and retention of Red Deer Polytechnic students through the provision of learning strategies, study skills, and interventions.
    Position Responsibilities
  • Learning and Executive Functioning Skills Development
  • Develop and deliver learning and executive functioning skills workshops to students; customize workshops for inclass presentations at the request of instructors.
  • Assess the learning needs and executive functioning behaviours of individual students and work oneonone or in small group situations to facilitate the development of learning and executive functioning skills/strategies.
  • Identify need for further assessment and refer to appropriate supports.
  • Maintain confidential records and data regarding student use of learning and executive functioning skills development assistance.
  • Participate in the implementation and delivery of related programming within Student Supports department, such as Thriving in Action.
Communication and Promotion- Develop information, initiatives and resources and promote/market to reach students through various platforms.

  • Where appropriate, work in partnership with Accessibility and Counselling Services on student's individualized Support Plans.
  • Advise faculty on barriers that students face, their impact on student success/retention and strategies to lessen these barriers.
  • Consult with faculty regarding the progress and learning needs of their students to develop and deliver targeted services accordingly.
  • Participating in divisional and/or campuswide committees whose work involves the development of student learning skills and strategies.
  • Consultation and collaboration with the Centre for Teaching and Learning as well as Accessibility Services regarding the promotion of Universal Design for Learning.
Continuous growth and acquisition of new skills- Actively participates in training and professional development activities as they become available,

  • Continuously check for new and best practices for learning strategies and remediation programs/activities.
  • Actively acquires knowledge and regularly familiarizes self with policy and procedures.
  • Aligns work with Strategic and Organizational Plans.

Required Qualifications

  • Four (4) year undergraduate degree, or three (3) year undergraduate degree plus one full additional year of University in a related program representing four years of study or equivalent.
  • Bachelor of Education in one of adult learning, Inclusive Education or Educational Psychology or similar.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Over one up to two years of experience
  • Knowledgeable of the aspects and barriers of adult learners at various life stages and circumstances
  • Knowledge in best practices for learning/behavioural strategies and support programs/activities in a postsecondary setting
  • Familiarity with the impacts of specific learning challenges and disorders is an asset.
  • Presentation and group facilitation experience
  • Strong interpersonal, communication and organizational skills
  • Able to achieve results through initiative and independent action
  • Demonstrated commitment to promoting student success

  • Starting at $30.04 per hour
    Benefits and Compensation Information
  • An additional 15% of the hourly rate in lieu of vacation, statutory holidays and benefits.
