Reporting to the Manager, Operations and Support Services, this position will oversee Shelter, Support and Housing Administration (SSHA)'s comprehensive Occupational Health & Safety (OH&S) Program, providing consultation and expert guidance to lead the program's further development and implementation.


Major Responsibilities:


  • Develops, manages and is responsible for the timely and effective delivery of SSHA's OH&S program, while supporting the implementation of other key Divisional and Corporate health and wellness initiatives and strategies.
  • Provides work direction and supervision to SSHA's Health & Safety Officer and other direct reports as assigned to provide staff working in the delivery of homeless services with expert advice, guidance and consultation on all areas within health and safety, such as infection prevention and control (IPAC) requirements, workplace incident reporting, workplace violence and psychological safety.
  • Develops and implements detailed work plans, identifies gaps and risks, provides recommendations and drafts policies and procedures regarding SSHA's OH&S program's specific requirements.
  • Provides consultation and guidance to senior leaders, managers and supervisors on all OH&S matters on a daytoday basis, including legislative compliance, best practices, hazard identification and assessment and safety procedures development and implementation.
  • Deals with confidential and sensitive information affecting personnel, operations and resources.
  • Leads the development and regular evaluation of the Division's OH&S Program. Responsible for the planning, implementing, advocating, promoting, monitoring and documentation of safety procedures, and for the development and updating of the Division's Health & Safety manual and other procedural guidance.
  • Oversees the creation and facilitation of regular communication for the Division that outlines health and safety updates, strategies, trends and successes.
  • Develops annual workplans for the Division's health & safety recognition and awareness events, including the annual Corporate JHSC recognition event.
  • Applies sound project management methodologies and leads the planning, design and delivery of assigned projects related to OH&S, Fit-Testing and other health and wellness initiatives undertaken for the Division.
  • Fosters collaboration between SSHA's Health & Safety Officer and other Divisional staff, ensures effective teamwork, communication, high standards of work quality, organizational performance and continuous learning.
  • Establishes effective and collaborative working relationships with the Division's senior leadership team, managers, project managers and Local 79 Leadership. Liaises with staff from other City Divisions, internal and external stakeholders, including Toronto Public Health and other levels of government.
  • Prepares reports, briefings and summaries for senior leadership highlighting impacts and measuring outcomes related OH&S program development and implementation.
  • Drafts/develops reports, responses and presentations related to OH&S for the Manager and/or the Division's senior management team.
  • Works in collaboration with Corporate OH&S (People & Equity) to lead Corporate Health and Safety initiatives for the Division, and provides consultation on the assessment of work related hazards and the development of preventive actions.
  • Acts as a primary lead for authoritative governing agencies related to OH&S and as the Divisional liaison with Corporate OH&S and the Ministry of Labour in regards to workplace investigations and reporting requirements.
  • Identifies the Division's OH&S training needs by position and work area in collaboration with SSHA's People Services unit and Corporate OH&S.
  • Leads the development of the Division's OH&S training curriculum/strategy, to include the identification and scheduling of requisite training courses and refresher courses.
  • In collaboration with People Services, develops and maintains a Divisional OH&S staff training tracking system, including the issuance of staff notifications for training or refresher courses, and monitoring status by organizational unit.
  • Secures internal and/or external training courses, seminars, guest speakers, and the development of workshops to support the implementation of the Division's OH&S Program.
