**at St. James-Assiniboia School Division
The Southern Chiefs' Organization (SCO) requires a Jordan's Principle Coordinator to support
First Nation children and families attending schools within the St. James-Assiniboia School Division.
BACKGROUND:
SCO is a growing and dynamic regional Indigenous organization that represents 34 Anishinaabe and
Dakota Nations and more than 83,000 citizens in southern Manitoba. SCO was established 23 years ago
by the Chiefs as an independent organization to protect, preserve, promote, and enhance First Nation
of the spirit and intent of the Treaty-making process.
Jordan's Principle is named in memory of Jordan River Anderson, a young boy from Norway House Cree
Nation. Jordan's Principle is a child first initiative intended to ensure that First Nation children do not
experience denials, delays, or disruptions of public services ordinarily available to other children due to
jurisdictional disputes. The goal of the initiative is to connect First Nation children and their families with
quality services, supports, and resources to achieve holistic outcomes.
The SCO Jordan's Principle Coordinator at the St. James-Assiniboia School Division is a valuable member
of the SCO Team and works with educators and families at the St. James-Assiniboia School Division to
access programs, services and supports to increase educational success for First Nation children. This role
will ensure First Nation children and their families have access to the educational, health, and social
helping children and families to navigate and connect with the programs, services and supports to which
they are entitled.

KEY RESPONSIBLITIES:
Utilizing a strength-based approach to build confidence, focus on solutions and engage the family, the
SCO Jordan's Principle Coordinator will work with educators and families to support First Nation children
at the St. James-Assiniboia School Division.
- Working with children, families, and educators to identify the resources needed to address gaps and
children who require educational, health or social support.
- Providing navigation support to appropriate programs, departments and/or agencies and working
- Attending school case conferencing with families as required.
- Representing Anishinaabe and Dakota Nations in southern Manitoba
- Collaborating with appropriate service providers and/or programs, both within the St. James
- Assiniboia School Division, within SCO, as well as externally, such as with:
- Tribal Council Service Coordinators.
- SCO Jordan's Principle Coordinators located at various sites across southern Manitoba
- Jordan's Principle staff at Indigenous Services Canada.
- Children's Disability Services.
- Others.
- Maintaining confidentiality in accordance with privacy legislation and St. James-Assiniboia School
- Connecting families with Non-Insured Health Benefits (NIHB) through the SCO NIHB Navigator to
information on eligible NIHB and benefit amounts, and how to address denials and appeals.
SPECIFIC RESPONSIBLITIES:
- Provides Jordan's Principle supports and services for First Nations children referred by St. James
- Assiniboia School Division educators and support staff, or via selfreferrals by parent and caregivers.
- Provides consistent, comprehensive, competent, and culturally appropriate services.
unmet needs and their families to secure access to services and supports.
- Builds and nurtures relationships across communitybased programs and services, service providers,
- Ensures children and families receive high quality culturally appropriate services and supports, assists
health, education, and social services, and supports across all stages and levels of care.
- Identifies barriers to First Nation children in achieving educational success and develop a plan with
- Collects, analyzes, and interprets program statistics and data for reporting purposes.
- Adheres to SCO and St. James-Assiniboia School Division policies, procedures, and standards. Provide
