ONE POSITION FOR THE INTERNATIONAL STUDENT PROGRAMS.

THIRTY HOURS PER WEEK. TEN MONTHS PER YEAR.

THIS IS A NEW POSITION AND WILL RECEIVE A FINAL PAY RATING 6 MONTHS AFTER THE NEW INCUMBENT STARTS AS PER THE JOB EVALUATION PLAN.

AN INTERIM RATE OF $28.36 AN HOUR WILL BE APPLIED.

DUTIES TO COMMENCE APRIL 3, 2023.


Terms of Employment:

September through June.

Position requires flexibility in working hours to attend meetings and events before and after school, in the evenings and possibly on weekends and during winter and spring breaks.


KNOWLEDGE AND EXPERIENCE
Secondary school graduation or equivalent

Minimum of two (2) years of post-secondary education in Psychology, Sociology, Social Work, Child and Youth Care, Immigration/Migration studies, Ethnic/Cultural/Indigenous studies, Human Development and Family Studies, Applied Behaviour Science or Education or equivalent

Minimum of two (2) years of related work experience

Valid British Columbia driver's license and transportation to travel to various schools throughout the District and transport students to community services as required

Knowledge and understanding of the challenges involved in cultural adaptation in an educational setting, and of the immigrant experience related to settlement

Sound knowledge of school and community resources available to immigrant and newcomer students, and working knowledge of general policies, curriculum and operation of public school districts in BC

Fluency in Spanish and English required

Fluency in Portuguese an asset

Assist educators with interpreting student needs where cultural differences are a factor and the ability to assist with the bridging of cultures

Clearly articulates thoughts and ideas and shares timely and relevant information openly, honestly and respectfully using oral, written and visual formats

Respects the confidential nature of all information relating to students, parents and staff

Uses a solution-based approach to analyze relevant facts, evidence and data to determine specific issues and make decisions to solve problems


RESPONSIBILITIES
Facilitates and assists with inclusion, orientation, student settlement and related activities within a classroom environment in collaboration with other school personnel

Facilitates communication between the school and home regarding the student's current progress, and acts as a liaison amongst school and district staff, including teachers, administrators, support staff, students, and parents

Assists newcomer students to understand and derive the maximum benefit from the school system and to help parents and custodians understand the school system, their responsibilities and how to participate in the education of their children

Assists teachers, administrators and support staff by obtaining information from the home concerning the student's background and previous educational progress

Provides translation and/or interpretation between school staff and students/families, and in one-to-one and group meetings, public meetings and public inquiries by telephone or in person, and other situations as required

Acts as a role model within the context of their culture, school and community; assists in building student self-esteem

Maintains ongoing records and daily work log

Provides professional development around cultural competency to other district staff

Performs other related duties as time permits and/or assigned as required
