Role Description


Reporting to the Chief Operating Officer, the Controller will be responsible for preparation of financial statements, and developing and maintaining accounting principles, practices and procedures to ensure accurate and timely financial statements.

You will play a critical role within the record-to-report process but also be a forward-thinker, providing inputs within vital forecasts and analysis.


The following is a list of the types of things which the Controller job will include, this list is not exhaustive and there will be other tasks associated with the role either not listed or not yet relevant.

As TAP is a rapidly growing start-up, the job should be expected to change overtime but the nature of the work should remain the same.


General:


  • Lead the finance function at TAP.
  • Oversee all financial reporting. Ensure best outcomes and deliverables in accordance with timelines.
  • Liaise with auditors and tax advisors.
  • Follow best policies and procedures (P&P).
  • Track hours spent working on all projects.
  • Keep appropriate records and documents as needed.
  • Participate in mandatory internal TAP meetings such as Science Fridays and Good Morning Mondays.
  • Participate in other meetings as needed or scheduled.
  • Communication is key. We promote openness at Theory + Practice, questions are welcome.
  • Help strategize for TAP growth at every step by assessing feasibility of different ideas during projects and identifying opportunities for next projects.
  • While working at the office is not required at this point, it is important to get to know other TAP team members and ideally spend some time in the office. Also, as the needs of this role grow and change, some office work time may be required.

Responsibilities & Deliverables:

Day to day accounting needs, collaborating with the Administration Manager:

  • Preparing month-end balance sheet schedules and journal entries to reconcile cash, accounts receivable, fixed assets, accounts payable, accruals, and capital leases.
  • Reconciling monthly deferred revenue balance and subscription revenues by reviewing billings and collections as well as recalculating recognized revenue under generally accepted accounting principles.

Job specific tasks:

  • Managing the Annual Operating Plan (AOP), budget vs actual expense reporting and our forward looking forecasting.
  • Preparation of financial statements and reports.
  • G/L management.
  • Payroll, benefits, and other tax filings such as PST and GST.
  • Help other departments with financial modeling.
  • Updating admin related to ESOP (with COO).
  • Participation in setting up a data room for TAP.
  • Internal and external financial reviews.
  • Guiding other departments in budgeting and forecasting.
  • Presenting to staff, and TAP teams at various levels.
  • Finance related grant proposal, writing and reporting (such as MITACS, and other government related programs).
  • Manage the company's Scientific Research and Experimental Development (SRED) tax credit claims, working closely with internal teams and external advisors to maximize benefits.
  • Act as the primary point of contact with Canada Revenue Agency (CRA).
  • Monitor changes in tax laws and regulations, providing guidance on the implications for the company's overall financial position.
  • Execute various financial processes, including the creation and management of data rooms to support transactions or audits.

Reporting:


  • Monthly reporting to COO of progress against budget, including an explanation of any material deviations (as needed, this will change over time).
  • Biweekly reporting to COO of AR & AP balances and aging schedules, as well as any other mutually agreed upon KPIs (as needed).
