The Post Secondary Instructor, Math, is responsible for the delivery of program-specific math as a supplement to the core curriculum for the Women of Steel Welding program.

WELD-9101: Introductory Trade Math for Welding


Description:
This course provides students foundational trade math skills that are crucial for welding. These math skills are needed to ensure accuracy in the specifications of a fabricated product.

This course will begin with basic number operations and move on to more complex calculations that can be practically applied within the context of welding.


Learning Outcomes:

  • Perform basic calculations with whole numbers, common fractions and decimals using addition, subtraction, multiplication and division
  • Perform calculations relating to averages, ratios and percentages
  • Convert units of measurement from imperial to metric
  • Calculate perimeter, area and volume of squares, rectangles triangles and circles
  • Perform basic calculations for layout and fabrication tasks

Responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Teaching basic and applied math using appropriate and effective instructional methods, such as lectures and demonstrations to accommodate the learning styles of individual students; enhancing the student learning experience and ensuring engagement in learning activities;
- uses relevant technology to support instruction; including the use of MITT's Learning Management System;
- continuously checks in with students to ensure they understand course material and are able to retain the information they learned;
- prepares, administers, and evaluates assignments and assessments; provides marks and feedback to students on their assessment items in a timely manner to ensure they have time to learn and improve;
- plans lessons and classroom activities that are linked to the course outline, consistently demonstrating preparedness for class;

  • Demonstrate approachability and a desire to help, encouraging trust and communication with students.
  • Maintain and enter accurate and relevant student information and records in the Student Information System and Learning Management System ensuring information is entered according to MITT Policy.
  • Provide information and updates to the Senior Manager, ITCE or designate as required or requested.
  • Adhere to and implement MITT's policies and procedures.
  • Effectively manage classroom materials and resources.
  • Ensure Industry Training and Continuing Education department has access to all instructional resources and assessment material.

Required Qualifications and Experience:


  • A combination of related education and experience may be considered._
  • Postsecondary certification, diploma, degree, or qualification in math or science, or tradesrelated math relevant to MITT programs (an inprogress qualification will also be considered);
  • Experience in a field relevant to MITT program areas considered an asset, particularly in the skilled trades;
  • Minimum of 3 years' experience in math, science, or tradesmath instruction/tutoring in a formal setting;
  • Experience with postsecondary and/or adult students;
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills, public speaking;
  • Excellent organization and time management skills;
  • Knowledge of current trends and practices in the trades, as well as in math/science education;
  • Positive, collaborative attitude with the ability to motivate and inspire others;
  • Experience with a Learning Management System;
  • Able to work effectively and achieve work goals in a collaborative environment, as well as independently.
