RVH has the largest surgical program in the North Simcoe Muskoka Local Health Integration Network (NSM LHIN) with 65% of surgeons and approximately 80,000 surgical cases annually.


As part of the Medical Device Reprocessing Team, the Surgical Service Technician (SST) provides reprocessed and sterilized medical equipment for RVH to support patient care.

The SST adheres to guidelines and standards set by organizations such as CSA (Canadian Standards Association), PIDAC (Provincial Infections Diseases Advisory Committee), and MDRAO (Medical Device Reprocessing Association of Ontario).

The SST works in a fast-paced environment where attention to detail and accuracy is imperative.

In this role you will be required to rotate through Endoscopy/Cystoscopy, Surgery Treatment Clinic, and the Medical Device Reprocessing Department.

Day to day activity is full of variety as the changing needs of the Operating Room.

The SST works within the various Medical Device Reprocessing areas to provide reprocessed Medical Devices for the operating rooms, surrounding area clinics, and inpatient units throughout the day.

The SST must be competent within the areas of decontamination, inspection/assembly, prep and pack, sterilization, case picking, and centre core.

The SST is familiar with the IMPRESS Instrument Management System.

The SST is responsible for effectively communicating and collaborating with TEAM MDRD and the Perioperative Staff to obtain equipment required for procedures.


  • Grade 12 Education required
  • Current Medical Device Reprocessing Association of Ontario (MDRAO formally CSAO) Techniques Course or a Medical Device Reprocessing College Course within the last 5 years essential
  • CSA Canadian Medical Device Reprocessing Technician Certification (CMDRT) an asset
  • International Association of Healthcare Central Service Materiel Management (IAHCSMM) Certified Registered Central Service Technician (CRCST) an asset
  • Current experience with aseptic techniques and decontamination, cleaning, disinfection, and sterilization of Surgical Instruments essential
  • Current experience with cleaning, disinfecting, and reprocessing of Gastrointestinal, Transesophageal, Urological scopes essential
  • Demonstrated current experience working with reprocessing equipment: washer/disinfector, cart washer, ultrasonic, steam sterilizers, low temp sterilizer, instrument tracking program an asset
