Position Description


Reporting to the Manager, Educational Programming, the Coordinator, Educational Programming for
newcomer youth is responsible for providing leadership and assistance with Empowerment Squared's Educational programs, like the School Readiness Program, and other educational initiatives for newcomer and marginalized adults to further Empowerment Squared's mission and vision.


Working alongside the Managers of Educational Programming, other E2 departments and School Board representatives, the Coordinator, Educational Programming for
newcomer youth will help with facilitating programs and participate in strategic planning, outreach and administration for
newcomer youth both internally and externally.


Duties & Responsibilities

  • Outreach and recruitment support for programs and volunteers.
  • Comfortable working with newcomer children and youth ages 61
  • Some experience and knowledge of ESL and ELL strategies are an asset.
  • Some experience writing curriculum for children and youth is an asset.
  • Track participant progress for subsequent years while in elementary school.
  • Implementation and execution of a newcomer youth governance model.
  • Training newcomer youth for various programs i.e. Youth Council, School Readiness Program Orientation, Empowered Leaders in Training (ELITE).
  • Facilitation of interpretation and translation services when applicable.
  • Work collaboratively with other Coordinators of Educational Programming and E2 staff.
  • Be flexible.
  • Responsible for facilitating various programs including Educational.
  • Comfortable communicating with various school representatives or other external agencies.
  • Comfortable communicating student behaviors, both positive and negative, with students and parents.
  • Allocate and organize work plans and resources effectively.
  • Identify, anticipate, and document issues and challenges and provide mitigation recommendations.

  • Escalate key issues/risks to Manager of Educational Programming and ensure timely action to maintain project timelines.
  • Will often work in person and must have access to transportation.
  • Will sometimes have to work outside of normal office hours
  • Will often work in person i.e. at schools, HWDSB Welcome Centre or either E2 locations
  • Support program close out activities which would include reports, evaluations and meetings etc.

  • Speaking Arabic, French, Farsi or Ukrainian will be an asset

Relevant Skills & Qualifications

  • Familiarity with Hamilton's Black and newcomer communities and Black and newcomer youth engagement is an asset

-Creation, implementation and execution of a newcomer adult advisory council as a priority

-Demonstrated leadership experience working with diverse groups including not for profit organizations, community groups, businesses, schools and other community stakeholders.

  • Proven organizational and time management skills including the ability to work with tight deadlines and competing priorities
  • Excellent English oral communication, report writing skills, and reading
  • Ability to work independently as well as within a team to create and complete collaborative projects
  • Ability to put together and make presentations that include topics such as promoting programs, status, milestones, achievements, budget and risk management
  • Ability to work in a fast past work environment
  • Regularly attending and participating in team meetings
  • Some proven knowledge of the education system in Ontario
  • Computer proficiency
  • Good interpersonal, presentation, negotiation, and organizational skills
  • Ability and comfortable to work either in person or online with diverse staff and clientele
  • Experience and sensitivity in dealing with members of different cultural and racial backgrounds, including visible and invisible dimensions of diversity
