This posting is for one hourly position starting mid-June with an expected end date of August 23, 2024.


The Visual Arts Instructor I's work within a team environment to develop and implement creative, age-appropriate programs for Strathcona County in the areas of pottery, fused glass, painting, drawing, fibre arts, sewing, paper crafts, contemporary art interpretation, and games.

This position will report to the Visual Arts Programmer at Smeltzer House Visual Arts Centre.

The programs you will lead, or support include:

  • Summer camps from Monday
  • Friday from 8:00 am 5:00 pm

Other programs that you may occasionally support include:

  • Community programs scheduled from Monday
  • Sunday from 9:00 am
  • 12:00 pm and 4:00 pm
  • 9:00 pm (child/ youth/ adult)
  • Group programming occurring on weekend mornings and afternoons from 9:00 am 4:00 pm and weekday evenings from 4:00 pm 9:00 pm (Example: Brownies, Girl Guides, Birthday Parties, etc.)

Responsibilities

  • Provide children and youth with an inclusive, positive, safe, and creative learning experience
  • Provide safe supervision to participants engaged in visual art programs
  • Plan, organize, schedule, and present art activities, games, outdoor play, and other activities
  • Provide support to the operation of summer programs such as registration administration, daily attendance records, communication with parents, and accurate recording and monitoring of specific registrants' information
  • Daily set up and cleanup of activity site(s)
  • Ensure health and safety regulations are followed
  • Provide daily feedback and communicate any incidents that occurred in the program, event, or camp to a supervisor

Skills and Qualifications

  • Positive, proven leadership and teambuilding skills
  • Ability to maintain high standards of respect, safety, quality, and cooperation
  • Timemanagement skills and the ability to work with mínimal supervision
  • Outstanding problem solving and communication skills
  • Classroom management skills
  • Minimum Grade 10 completed and demonstrated experience working with children
  • Experience and passion in visual arts, fine crafts, and/or recreation would be an asset
  • Strathcona County's Leaders in Training program is considered an asset
  • Demonstrated experience or skills with some or all of the following art media:
  • Art fundamentals; painting media, drawing media, art and design
  • Contemporary art knowledge and interpretation skills in a gallery or museum environment
  • Cultural Arts and heritage crafts
  • Knowledge of Indigenous culture, art, and history
  • Experience interpreting curriculumconnected arts programming
  • Ceramic arts; pottery techniques, handbuilding, wheelthrowing, surface decoration
  • Glass fusing, slumped forms, familiarity with glass studio tools and operation
  • Fibre arts, têxtiles and sewing
  • Multidisciplinary art skills are considered an asset

Conditions of Employment

  • Submission of Satisfactory Vulnerable Sector Check
  • Current First Aid and CPR (Level C) certification Ability to lift 20lbs. and supply totes as part of the job duties and stand for extended periods of time
