Mohawk College is currently recruiting for our nextNewcomer Employment Advisor
The Newcomer Employment Advisor also works with newcomers in the community seeking Employment and Academic advice. The Newcomer Employment Advisor engages with community organizations assisting newcomers to deliver information and orientation sessions.
Responsibilities:
The duties of this position include, but are not limited to:
Prepares students for employment as follows:
- Develops and delivers presentations to instruct students from LINC and ELT programs on a variety of job search topics that are particularly relevant to newcomer students.
- Provides departmentwide seminars and workshops on a variety of job search topics intended to help newcomer students with their unique challenges, particularly at key times in the semester (presentations range in duration based on need and class time availability).
- Develops strategies to overcome sensitive issues related to individual employment barriers for newcomers.
- Assists newcomer students to recognize job related skills and abilities and education required.
- Researches and develops resources including tip sheets and information sheets to assist newcomer students to develop effective job search strategies.
Liaises with employers as follows:
- Provides a full cycle of mentorship program including, mentorship information and orientation sessions to both mentors and mentees, recruitment of mentors, matching mentors with mentees, and reporting mentorship matches and outcomes to iCare.
- Recruits appropriate placement or mentorship opportunities that meet individual student needs by marketing and networking in the community.
- Researches agencies, businesses and services within the geographic catchment area of the college to gain an understanding of potential placement opportunities.
- Identifies and communicates with potential employers to educate them about the program goals and philosophy, and to recruit appropriate sites for student placements in a variety of focus areas.
- Confirms placements or mentorships that are available and appropriate for program/student needs.
- Follows up with sites before, during and after student placement to receive feedback and input for change/improvement.
- Organizes and recruits speakers for various oncampus or via zoom / teams workshops, as well as develops relationships with academic areas in order to assist students, employers and faculty in understanding current labour market needs and trends and develop employment opportunities.
Administrative work
- Responsible for monthly iCare reports including, any Employment Related, Information and Orientation sessions, Group sessions, and Mentorship.
- Develops, updates, and maintains the database (Excel and/or Access) which is used to record monthly data for all services provided through individual and group sessions, Mentorship program and WES Gateway. This data will be used on monthly basis to report to the funder.
- Reports to iCare.
- Other duties as assigned.
Liaises with Program Coordinators, Faculty and Staff as follows:
- Provides services, presentations and the opportunity to take advantage of in-class seminars on a variety of job search topics to all LINC and ELT classes.
- Meets with program faculty and staff to factfind, inform, problemsolve and/or plan strategies when appropriate to best meet student employmentrelated needs.
- Utilizes services within the college and the community to support successful transition to the workplace.
- Maintains uptodate database of services available for newcomers in the community.
- Prepares reports and captures data for reporting to IRCC (program funder).
- Works with other career service providers on campus including counselling and career coaching.
Qualifications:
- A three year postsecondary diploma/degree plus a certificate, diploma or professional designation in: Education, Human Resources, Student Affairs/Services, Career Development, Personal Coaching, or Counselling Techniques.
